Forums - Sales - How come Playstion fans pretend the gap is narrowing when the 360

When the 360 has outsold the ps3 for over 2 months now worldwide, I can understand i guess going off the last quarters earnings report BUT when the next earnings report comes in I expect the gap to be about 6 million

What do you guys think?

Probably because 1 Year ago the "gap" was over 8.5 Million big in the 360's favor.

3 Month's ago the "gap" was about 4.6 Million in favor of the 360. When it gets to shipments I'm pretty sure the gap shrinks even more.

The gap is now back up to about 5.5 Million according to VGChartz after what, 3 Month's of 360s?

While the gap may be increasing right now, in the past year the gap has been reduced by a LOT.

I can't see any other reason for why people would say the gap is shrinking.

I don't see Playstation fans saying that. But they seem to be incredibly upset by the 360's recent domination.

They also get very happy when the 360's weekly sales go down a bit.

Ultimately...

Well I cant remember the gap ever being over 8.5 mil.

That said its largely irrelevant. A gap of 5 mil when one has sold 10 mil the other 5mil is a 100 percent difference.

A gap of 5 mil when one has sold 100 mil and the other 95 is a 5 percent difference.

As sales continue the gap matters less and less.

Frankly its something fanboys worry about inbetween their frenzied masturbation sessions.

by earnigs report im assuming you mean next shipment data as that is do in a few weeks

the last shipment gap was 3.6M end of June thers no way it will be 6M for end of Septs you have to remember MS used to ship 3 different skus prior to slim and just recently the 4gb released and there where supply issues with the 250gb back in july, also MS had older skus still on shelves and i believe still have a few left

so i dont think they really shipped as many slims as you think and once the numbers come from sony and MS in a few weeks ya'll well be surprised at the shipment gap

i wouldnt be surprised at all if its just in the 4M range and we all know that for the months of Oct-Dec Q3 the PS3 will sell on par with 360 or even more and for Q4 Jan-March and beyond the PS3 should be flying high with new exclusive SW pumping out month after month titles like KZ3 motorstorm socom4 twisted metal infamous 2 last guardian ect ect

Isn't the gap like 3.5m according to earnings so why are you mentioning them? It's like defending floppy discs citing pen drives.

Pretend all they want but nothing changes the fact the the 360 has been outselling PS3 the last 2 months and what puzzles me the most is that they keep bringing up the year lead which is a bit silly  since Sony had bigger markethare and fanbase compared to xbox.

Well talking purely about shipments here's a bit of a history lesson for you. Comparing Microsoft's peak April-March period (lining up with Sony's fiscal year. Microsoft's FY is actually July-June) their peak shipment currently stands at 11.2 million in the April 2008-March 2009 stretch. At the end of March 2010 the shipment gap between PS3 and 360 stood at 4.5 million. As of the end of June it stood at 3.58 million. As of the end of June as far as shipments are concerned the 360 is up on the April 2008-March 2009 period by 200k, shipping 1.5 million units. That includes the first month of sales of the slim in the USA as well as the first shipment of slims to Australia and NZ, and most likely at least some of the first shipment to Europe (Obviously none of which would have been sold at that point). As it stands right now I'd say they have a shot at beating the 2008-2009 period by somewhere in the vicinity of 500k-750k, shipping around 12 million. As of last week Sony has stated that they're on track to reach their fiscal year projection of 15 million and the first half of the fiscal year actually looks like it might come in slightly above projections. Now I've voiced my curiosity in regards to how they plan to meet that projection since it seems like a rather lofty goal. I've theorized that we might be seeing a price cut at the beginning of next year, but who knows I could be wrong.

Well 360 was way ahead.. like maybe near 7 million up.. but then PS3 slim came out, was cheaper, slimmer and more enticing then the old SUPER HUGE PS3 Grille... and for the past year ( until like Jun 2010 )  because of those reasons i said above- the PS3 has had solid numbers and closed the gap down to around 4.3 million units..

Up until Jun of this year (2010 ) PS3 has lead the 360 in worldwide sales ( for this years sales alone ).. but as soon as Microsoft came out with the Xbox 360 slim shady model.. the same thing that happened for Sony a year ago happened for Microsoft now- Sales of Xbox 360 have dominated many months now!  I guess what goes around comes around !

The way it looks now, 360 is not only widening the gap again ( the gap is nearing  5.6 now and probably is over that but VGchartz isnt posting new figures as soon yet because of the Halo Reach release), but it has closed such a huge deficit (for this years sales)  that PS3 had on it.. that it looks like  by another 4 weeks ( today is sept 21, 2010 ) the XB360 will surpass PS3 sales for this years 'YEARLY' sales !!

And by the 2010 years end have the 360 back to around a 6  million console lead on the PS3 !!

Really the most daming thing isn't the 360's console lead, its the 360's software sales lead.. Which the 360 has sold around 120 MILLION more games worldwide then the PS3.  The software sales tell another story that says more gamers are on the 360 and the attachment rate on the 360 is higher .. More money for software companies is one reason why companies will continue to jump ship from the Sony camp.. In the end loyalty runs thin because the only reasons those companies really exist is to make games that make alot of cash, which is why you're seeing more big titles on multi-platforms and less exclusives..
