Wow... I do not know what to choose... All the Mario games are so revolutionary to the platform genre... They are all masterpieces, from Shigeru Miyamoto. But, I may have to give the upper hand to the 3D Mario games, but only because the 3D worlds bring so much more that 2D cannot. You spherically in 3D, instead of a compass-direction, found in 2D. Does that make sense? Anyways, I think that the 3D Mario games are marginally funner than the 2D ones, but I definitely like them all.

I would go with 2D by far, with the disclaimer that I haven't played Galaxy yet because I am getting it for Xmas.

I never liked Mario64 and I couldn't stand Sunshine.  I thought the action for both was really slow paced and the Water Squirting crap in Sunshine really wasn't my thing. 

I must have beaten Mario 3 and Super Mario World a dozen times each.  Those games are still fun today.  I do like the Paper Mario series, but I can't say which category they fit in.

I could not choose, I was raised on the original super mario bros and that will always be the closest one to me, but I still play mario 64 all the time, ten years after I brought it.
