I would go with 2D by far, with the disclaimer that I haven't played Galaxy yet because I am getting it for Xmas.
I never liked Mario64 and I couldn't stand Sunshine. I thought the action for both was really slow paced and the Water Squirting crap in Sunshine really wasn't my thing.
I must have beaten Mario 3 and Super Mario World a dozen times each. Those games are still fun today. I do like the Paper Mario series, but I can't say which category they fit in.
