Imagine if Sony or Nintendo, next generation bring out two form factors for their portable - a standard one that looks similar to the 3DS pictures we've seen or to the PSP and a jumbo version, roughly the size of the Ipad.

The larger version plays the same games, from the same cartridge/UMD/whatever. the code read off the disc by each is the same, but is upscaled on the jumbo version to counter for the larger screen - the pixels per inch is the same on both version.

You can also assume there are a variety of minor upgrades on the jumbo version, more internal storage and that it would have many features that are available to current ebook reader style devices.

Not in the style you are proposing. If they had an iPad-sized portable, I wouldn't be concerned about the size (provided it has enticing games, good controls and probably something more enticing than that too). But I wouldn't buy a device to play games built for a smaller machine. I'd never ever get a DSi XL.

No, that size is entirely pointless for me. If I'm going to have to take bag to carry it around, then I can just take my laptop, and the PSP is the right size to fit into my pocket (just) and yet large enough to play games on. I don't see any point in tablets for gaming, or for anything else

Nope, that thing would be too big to be called "portable", and the bigger screen would made games look worse than on the 3DS, PSP2 or whatever.

Yes, they'd share the same "pixels per inch", but not the same resolution so it'd have to rescale the image, making games look worse.
