I don't get why everybody raves about Reach and GT5 pushing HD consoles then act like somehow Wii is impervious to hardware movers..

Because we are talking them bumping the console a couple of hundred thousand. That isnt enough to change the trajectory.  As someone else said in a couple of weeks the Halo Reach bump will be basically over.

A good quality lineup with additions throughout the year maintains sales.  It also gets back to last year.  Wii sales jumped when the price dropped, but the Nintendo fans say it was because of NSMBWii which came nearly 2 months later.  If Nintendo doesnt drop the price this year you will see.  And what you will see will be pretty standard climb to holiday levels in November and December.

NSMB Wii has sold 15 million, and is still hovering around the top 10 charts nearly a year later. That is what I call the ULTIMATE hardware mover. To claim that somehow a $50 price cut had more of an effect on the hardware than the most popular franchise of all time is pretty laughable. In essence, if NSMB Wii is NOT a hardware mover, then no game is.

Remember in Japan Wii sales barely rose when it had its price cut. Only after NSMB Wii did sales really take off. The game single handedly sold out Wiis nearly worldwide after the console was recently in pretty steep decline.

People buy consoles for one reason, and one reason only, and that is to play games. If a console costs $20 but has no good games, it will not sell.

IMO, Nintendo would be foolish to drop the price of the Wii this year for several reasons. For one, it would only be a $50 drop, which would not be very significant. Second, it would be around the holiday season, when Nintendo consoles raise significantly anyways (even the Gamecube sold strongly around the holidays). Third, Wii's lineup for the remainder of the year is extremely strong compared to the first 9 months, and many have the potential to move consoles, the biggest being Donkey Kong. Obviously it won't be as big as NSMB, as nothing will, but it will still be the biggest title of the year in terms of moving consoles.

Holiday Wii bump from the price drop? Uh no

NSMB caused the Wii to go thru the roof.  No I believe you will see, because it sounds like your proof seems to be you just don't want it to happen

Just ignore the fact that a new DKC hasn't been released in 3 gens and it sold snes's despite a mario game released BEFORE it.

Nobody is expecting Donkey Kong to magically bump Wii sales to heaven all by itself. But the Wii didn't get a single million seller in 2010 so far besides Mario Galaxy 2 which didn't move hardware for obvious reasons. And starting October it gets those releases almost weekly with two potential 10 million sellers (Donkey Kong and Wii Party).

Donkey Kong won't bring a miracle to the console but people are clearly underestimating it. I guess most of you don't remember the craze that Donkey Kong Country brought to the SNES back in the day. And people didn't buy it because of its graphics (that's stupid, this was made up by people on internet forums. Of those 10 million Donkey Kong players maybe half a million bought it because of the graphics. The rest couldn't even tell) but because of the co-op gameplay. That game is magic to play through in co-op because you can always switch players. It's great to play with your "casual" friends or little brother. (And still most people never finished it )

Donkey Kong sold faster than Mario back in the day. It just didn't sell more because there was a sequel released just a year later and the SNES was already losing steam. The SNES already had Mario World and Mario Allstars when Donkey Kong was released and the game still pushed many consoles.

The problem isn't that a lot of the people underestimating it don't remember it, the problem is that they were incapable of realising what was going on due to being about 4 years old (or younger), and so all they can look at is a number on a computer screen without realising what actually happened at the time, and how important it was...

VGChartz

Well in 1994 I was 28 years old and was a gamer since I got an Atari 2600 from Service Merchandise in 1978 so I was around.

My take is that very rarely does a game really  push consoles for any extended period of time.  I dont believe that DKC made the masses run out and pickup a SNES.  It sold 49 million consoles and DKC sold like 8 million.

When people say NSMBWii sold 15 million copies I say so what. That doesnt mean the last 15, 10,5, 4,3, 2, 1 Wii console sales were because of NSMBWii.  They purchase a Wii for the library and the expectation that more new good games will come.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

hell yeah!!! good stuff from KH: BBS!!! nice starting sales and great PSP boost

Lowest ever Wii sales.

Wonder if it'll fall in the coming weeks ..

really ?

I could imagine next week will be lower.

Well, same time last year it kept declining until end of September, when Nintendo cut the price. They COULD do another legacy deal type thing in some fashion, or a permanent price cut. If they don't .. Wii "dominating " xmas talk is just bullshit, they're likely to win, but dominate? I don't think so.

OT: X360 outsells Wii for 12th week in a row.

WAIT.... Didn't the wii outsold the X360 last week?
