Sony entered the global gaming industry with the Japanese release of the original PlayStation in December of 1994. More than 11 years and two more consoles later, the electronics giant has pulled the plug on its first console, ceasing all production of PS units. Last September, Sony announced that the original PlayStation and its PSOne redesign had surpassed the 100 million units sold milestone.

Tell me, what sounds more plausible?  They sold 2 million units from Sept 2005 to 2007 or that they sold 30 milion units in that time frame?

notice how many they were shipping of ps1' slims per Quarter?

They sold just 29 million PS2's in the same period.  Do you really think they sold 30 milion PS's?

do you really think sony did not expand the playstation brand into other countries that did not have a playstation 1 at the time?

look there are places that this site does not have sales data for from arround the world..Sony has stated they sold through 130 million plasystation 1's through to the consumer. you can say that you do not agree with Sony's sell through number's but that could go for any number of companies.

as for myself i can only go by what they have stated, Sony has expanded into 6 more countries just recently within the last year for just the PS3 being released for the very first time.

Your argument is logical, except for the fact that Sony stopped production of the PSone ... so there were no new units to ship to new markets. Sony is not going to waste resources sending a product that it is not making to new markets. It will try to get the emerging markets to buy the newest tech (as it has with the PS3).

Obviously a transposing of numbers as he meant 103 million.  Other people need to stop arguing otherwise because everything provided to show this error is completely correct and factual.  Sony provided numbers for the system when they ceased production and that is final.

Now I will say that is quite an impressive number and always nice to look back on how wonderful the PS1 was.  And also how many great new game series it brought in... most notably my RE series.  Got to love that system and was a great entry one for Sony.

People people, for now this is the only solid info we have on the matter. It may or may not be proved wrong by Sony themselves but until that happens I would (actually imho anyone should) take the info released by the company itself over others.

As I see it they could have sold quite a lot to new nations for a really really cheap price to get their products cleared. Same is happening now with ps2. so yeah who knows right?

I'm not using numbers from this site.  I'm using numbers from Sony's quarterly and annual financial records.  You know,  the same documents they are required by law to provide their investors and the SEC?

102.49 is the offical cumulative total number of Playstation consoles distributed by Sony.  28.15 million of those 102.49 are of the PSone model.  Why are you having such a difficult time comprehending this?

yes but not until 7 months later the point was from sept 2005 to march 2006 the ps1 was still in production!..how many PS1 slims did sony produce in 7 month's?

thats the point the emerging market's some may not be able to buy the PS3 but could have indeed bought the PS1 slim. they just now put the PS2 in some markets that never had the PS2 before

that i think is a big point.

how many units in that 7 month's did sony produce of the PS1 slim

30 million in 7 months?  Now you are just being ridiculous.

Guys, guys. It's obvious that what we should really be measuring is all consoles that can play PS1 software. After all, this market's all about the games, right? Right.

Holy shitballs, the PS1 has sold like 300 million home consoles!

Edit: Updated the total with the extra 30 million units that Sony ordered Santa Claus to make in seven months. Close down the elf sweatshops, now!

PSOne

It only does everything.

Anywho, 103 million is still an incredible number of consoles sold, and should be celebrated. If the guy wasn't such a meanie head towards Sega, I would be happier about this news.

it is for the origional. not including the slim line

2004

June 30

20.77

39.91

39.61

100.29

so as of june 2004 the PS1 had already passed the 100 million mark

an so what your saying that

2005

March 31

21.59

40.78

40.12

102.49

so until 2006 sony produced more unit's since they stopped production 7 month's after that date but did not sell anymore?

by the way that would be a full year's worth of production by Sony's own timeline so in a full year how many Playstation 1's were produced from march 2005 to march 2006
