Forums - Sales - *Pikmin Sales Fail or Success?*

I was just wondering do you consider Pikmin sales good or bad? Pikmin has sold about 1.6 Million and Pikmin 2 has sold about 1 Million. Yes they are both Million sellers but it is also a Miyamoto franchise and when compared to Mario and Zelda(His other 2 main Franchises)the sales don't look as good. Either way I find both games amazing but are the sales good? Did they profit? Is Nintendo happy with Pikmin?

Pikmin struggle in sales like they do in life..

I think we can call the game a modest success.

The sequel sold considerably less and the Wii ports did pretty good but were only $30.

If they were truly happy with the sales, I think they would have continued the series by now.

Judging whether Pikmin and Pikmin 2 is a commercial success or failure is not an easy process.

The anti-Miyamoto/Pro-Sakamoto crowd will say in light of the success of Miyamoto's other Nintendo brands, Pikmin and Pikmin 2 are failures because they did not sell as well as a Zelda or Mario game. Especially since Pikmin 2 sold less than the original, which means the series is a dud with a limited audience who could not push a Pikmin 3 over 2 million copies sold.

The pro-Miyamoto crowd would argue of course the Pikmin series is a success. Miyamoto created a third-person RTS simulation type game and the fact both sold over 1 million copies shows just how much of a creative genius Miyamoto is. The creator of Megaman (Keiji Inafune) and Metroid (Yoshio Sakamoto) have not created a game outside of their hallmark series that has sold over 1 million copies. If Sakamoto and Inafune who have created 2 of the most iconic video game series cannot replicate Miyamoto in creating a series where the original and sequel have sold over 1 million each, then who is the barometer for commercial creativity success? Name me another famous developer besides Miyamoto who has created 3 series with at least 2 games in each of the series selling over a million copies.

Personally, I think it is a mix of the two. Yes, I agree in comparison to a Zelda or Mario game, the Pikmin games sales have been underwhelming considering it is coming from Miyamoto. Then again, considering that Pikmin is almost in a genre of it's own (third person RTS), both Pikmin games selling over 1 million is evidence of the weight Miyamoto still carries to this day.

The GC certainly made a profit and I think sold reasonably well, just not amazing

The NPC ports though didn't sell that well, probably due to lack of advertising, NPC Pikmin 2 not being released in the US and limited brand recognition among Wii owners that didn't own a GC.

However, I expect Pikmin 3 to break 1.5 - 2m when it hits the Wii (hopefully) soon

i never thought there was an "anti-Miyamoto/Pro-Sakamoto crowd". BTW stop making things up. Gumpei Yokoi (RIP) created Metroid. Not Sakamoto.

BTW i consider pikmin a mild success. while it sales are good (both on the GC and on the wii) it's not the commercial success miyamoto and nintendo hoped for.

Sakamoto carries the torch on Metroid now. I apologize for "making things up." I was under the impression from the Sakamoto interviews where Sakamoto talks about Samus's maternal instincts that Sakamoto was the brainchild. I was wrong and thank you for calling me out.

It's funny when you compare Pikmin to Mario and Zelda, because there's a fairly wide margin between Mario and Zelda.  Not every game is, or has to be, a massive hit.  Selling a million, even if the creator frequently goes beyond 10 million, is still a significant deal.  Definitely not a failure.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

Pikmin were never expected to have Mario or Zelda like sales for 2 reasons.

1. Mario and Zelda had over 15 years of a growing fanbase to work with.

2. Pikmin was established on Nintendo's lowest selling home console ever.

If you look at the ratio of install base to software sales, you'll see Pimin didn't do to bad when compared to Zelda.

NES (61 million | Legend of Zelda (6.5 million ) = 10.6%
SNES (49 million) | Link to the Past (4.6 million) = 9.4%
N64 (32 million) | Ocarina of Time (7.6 million) = 23%
N64 (32 million) | Majora's Mask (3.4 million) = 10.6%
GC (21 million) | Wind Waker (4.6 million) = 21.9%
GC (21 million) | Twlilight Princess (1.6 million) = 7.6%
Wii (74 million) | Twilight Princess (5.7 million) = 7.7%

GC (21 million) | Pikmin (1.6 million) = 7.6%

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Miyamoto has said that Pikmin 3 for wii is in development, but they have not yet given a release date, i'm guessing some time in 2011, but i've also thought that the series has never been that popular. Still sales must of been okay if they keep on making these games.......
