Forums - Sony Discussion - How Uncharted 2 set the technical benchmark (extensive read)

Uncharted 2 was an amazing game for sure. Didn't see many other games beat it even today. Compared to GoWIII, at least all the character models look great and "next-gen." Zeus and Poseidon have absolutely awful hair and all. The only thing that makes GoWIII beat this game is the framerate IMO.

I still can't believe how the GoWIII E3 demo is so different compared to the real game (had no blur, shitty framerate, etc.). That's what I call impressive optimization! Knowing Naughty Dog's track record and since Sony first parties trade their secrets between each other, there's no doubt in my mind Uncharted 3 is going to be "the" game when it releases.

The worst thing Sony did was release that GoW3 E3 demo.  I downloaded that and was so underwhelmed, I NEVER had any desire to play the retail version.  People were going on and on about how good the game looked but in the back of my mind, I kept thinking "WHAT!  THAT GAME LOOKED LIKE SHIT!".  I just assumed the set pieces were what looked so good.  You may not believe it, but this is the first post I've read that stated a significant difference between that demo and the retail game.  Now, I HAVE to play GoW3.

Its more an artistic benchmark, personally.

Don't be dismissive, Havok Physics is optimized for the Cell processor and the Cell processor is very good  for physics simulations. That said, I still prefer KZ2.

I still think Uncharted 2 is the console benchmark so far this generation, both technologically and artistically. What I admire most about it is that it did all the things it did and maintained a rock steady 30 FPS while doing it. I love high framerates, but if you can't achieve a rock steady framerate, please lock it at 30 FPS.

Which was developed by Havok. Its hardly something which is different from any other PS3 game which uses Havok in this example.

Love the effort that Naughty Dog has put into Uncharted 2. A very laudable performance indeed. But the question that begs to be asked is: How will they top this????

Advanced: check

Multiplayer: check

Co-op online: check

Epic campaign: check

local support: ?

Ability to rewind during video files: ?

3D: ?

Move: ?

Youtube: ?

I didnt know there was online co-op. Got to check it out!

But no other PS3 game implemented it like Uncharted 2 did.

Not many games have reason to implement it in the same way. In any case implementation = artistry, the actual technical development was all Havok in this case.

What games have "reason" to do is irrelevant though. Fact is, Uncharted 2 has done it in a way that has yet to be replicated. The credit given is well deserved.

Credit for artistry yes. Uncharted 2 wouldn't stand out on pure technical merit alone because people like you would never appreciate it.

Yeah man, its pretty great. The online co-op consists of objective and arena game-types.

You know I don't know all this technical business with regards to business but in my eyes, having played both games at least twice through the single player, God of War III looks better than Uncharted 2.

Both God of War III and Uncharted 2 wowed me so many times.

In particular, The Pits of Tatarus and Chronos, Poseidon Level at the beginning, CIty of Olympus and Hades Boss fight stood out as the best graphic scenes in Console Gaming. After defeating all the enemies, I literally stood at one of the pathways in the Pits of Tatarus and the CIty of Olympus, staring out afar and could not keep my jaw shut. It blew my mind.

In particular in Uncharted 2, Shambala, Nepal, Helicopter and Train scene, Ice Caves stood out as one of the best graphics ever. Shambala is one of the most beautiful places in Gaming history for me. Never have I seen such beauty from one location. Amazing stuff.

Uncharted 2 of course deserves much credit for setting the bar for graphics but I reckon God of War III topped Uncharted 2 this year. But still, Uncharted 2 is still the game to beat when it comes to Graphics these days.

So how do Uncharted 2 and GoW3 stack up against Halo: Reach? Or do we not know enough yet to make any analysis?
