Forums - Sales - TV market share, LG > Sony

well if i was buying a tv now i would probably go with sharp, but it's darn hard to find in Portugal, probably only online.

well I keep hearing from people that sony tvs are brilliant for movies but not good for gaming...

I was going to grab an LG because you get great value for the price but I didn't know much about how reliable their home TVs were.. I've already had 2 LCD screens fail on me.. Toshiba 32" LCD which is less than 4 years old and and LG 19" LCD monitor which was less than 2 years old.. you can pick up LG tvs everywhere now and they are much cheaper than the competition. Go into larger chains of ASDA,Tesco and Sainsburys or Richer Sounds and find LG's being sold in there.

So after some research I decided to go with panasonic plasma this time and haven't regretted it one bit except during the first week of getting it home and setting it up and thinking.. "dayum that's a really big ass tv for my room"...... but I've gotten used to the size now and think think it's brilliant for gaming and great for retro consoles too.

I guess time will tell if this will be reliable or not but I love panasonic stuff anyway even tho they cost more than other manufacturers.

3D tv's are still too expensive and I really didn't want to shell out over 100 for each additional glasses here in UK

Doesn't LG = lifes good? Anyway, life must really be good for LG.

That's okay, beacuse I think I'm right because I think I'm right!

Right now I'm buying mid-range, which for me would be Samsung or maybe LG, who I feel have improved a lot in recent years.

I tend to lean towards Panasonic at the higher end and prefer them overall.  Sony I find a shade better than Samsung and LG for image towards the higher end of the Sony range but I find Sony to feel pricing relative to the specifications.

So I'd probably only get a Sony TV if I found a specific deal that made it more appealing than the other options.

I think Sony advertise and push their TVs harder than Panasonic do, hence the order of the marketshare isn't really that much of a surprise to me as it's actually in line with how I view the price/marketing/image of the various vendors.

I own a high end Sony Bravia X series, does that make be like someone you should look up to? I think it does. Theres no shame in looking up to a TV owner with a better TV. We are consumers after all, isn't that our mission? To continually upgrade our TVs so that we can claim they are better than everyone else we know?

You know what the funny thing is with TVs? The technology is moving so fast that in some ways its better to buy a 'cheap' TV more often than to buy a top end TV for more and sit on it for 5 years. In the space of that 5 years you could buy a cheap TV then replace it once more with something better than the LCD you already had which will also be better than the LCD you would have bought anyway and as a bonus you'd have a spare set for the bedroom / kids and you would have ended up paying less for both than you did for the one. I can get 4 TVs which are better than the one I own for the price I paid at the time.

I'm looking at you with a wry smile and a raised eyebrow...

Anyway, I think I'm going to get something massively high end when I get another TV (probably early next year) so I can sit on the perch of 'superior tech' and gloat as well!

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Sony Bravia i swear by them. Its my favorite tv in my house unfortunatly its not mine.  I have a samsung plasma couldnt spend a whole lot, unfortunately needed a quick replacement after my ps3 went into it. I plan on getting a sony 3d tv whenever.

       Coffee is for closers!

I hate the TV second hand market, it's awful in the UK. First of all TV's lose value REAL fast and second of all due to their size it's difficult to sell them on unless the buyer is prepared to pick up or the seller is prepared to drop off. This limits it's eBay potntial.

I think it stands for Lucky Goldstar, well it did originally. I remember studying them for my Geography A-Level, interesting company.

OT, if i could afford a Sony TV in the size i've got, i would have bought it, but the Sammy is good enough and huge.

Bravias have always been top of the range, they do some really clever things, but you need all the other peripheries to really appreciate it.

Gloater.... I always knew you would get 3D first just to get back at me!

Tease.

The Korean companies really seem to be on the rise in electronics.

Basically if you go into a Best Buy or other large chain, you will only see four types of TV's: Samsung, LG, Sony, and Toshiba. Along with a few store/low end brands of course.

I know when I recently went shopping for a Sharp TV. They were pretty hard to find at all.

Thats pretty much why Craigslist was invented, at least in the USA.

I never got the point of craigslist, until I realized it's good for furniture, big TV's, stuff like that, that you really dont want to ship, but somebody locally can just come to your house and get it.

I know about TV's losing value though LOL. I paid something like $550 for my 27" LCD HDTV back in 2007 I believe. I recently upgraded to a 42" for roughly the same price! You now routinely see 42" sets for as low as 500-600, sometimes even 399. Now I gaurentee in a couple years you will see like 55" sets for the same 600. Unless 3DTV delays the price decreases.

I kept my 27" for the bedroom. Realisticaly it has perhaps $100 value at best, so there's no point selling it. Considering you could probably buy a brand new 27" with more modern features for 199, maybe 299 tops.
