My guess is if he likes those series', that he already has one or numerous retro consoles.
I would advise in picking up a 360 or a PS3 to go alongside the Wii.

1.- FF VII was the begining of the end for me, main series is in the PS3 but none of them have matched the masterpiece that FF VI is.
2.- Sonic is nothing but a decaying and rotten corpse used as a puppet for Sega, well maybe Sonic Colors for the Wii could be good .... maybe.
3.- Another dead franchise.
4.- Mortal Kombat, dead but the rebirth could be good, unfortunally it's a PS3 anmd XBOX360 title.
5.- PS3 or XBOX360, I haven't played the game in 1 1/2 year, one of the biggest dissapoinments of this generation for me.
6.- Another dying series that it's at the PS3 and XBOX360
7.- Mario Kart ... Wii???
8.- It's dead
9.- Dead
10.- It's comming in a couple of months for the Wii.

i can totally relate. well almost. ive really enjoyed the endless ocean titles. but yeah, generally speaking thats been what ive encountered with my own wii experiences. in fact, i would probably be a bit more harsh than not as great for most of them ive played

Just the good one like Valkyria Chronicles, Demon's Soul, Red Dead Redemption, Fallout, etc. Anyway I guess a PS3/XBOX350 and a Wii is a great combo for anybody you get the Nintendo games and some nice games like Muramasa, LKS, etc. Wi the HD you get the commercial blockbusters, FPS and RPGs.
