I got Heavy Rain in the mail last Thursday, Platinum'd it on Wednesday and sent it back this morning. A six day platinum. And if you marathon the game during the weekend and follow a platinum trophy guide religiously, you can manage to platinum it a day or two faster than that no problem. I really liked it but Heavy Rain is not for everyone. Adventure games (unless you count action-adventure games) like this don't really have broad appeal in the west. A game like this wouldn't have managed to sell 600k in North America like it did without the huge hype train and production values behind it. This is a truly niche game. But as a fan of story-heavy adventure games and visual novels, Heavy Rain was a perfect fit for me.
I understand why Heavy Rain gets criticized so much. I've seen the "zomg, this is just a QTE game", "those graphics look like shit. Real humans don't look like that" and "this story sucks balls. Worse than the hollywood movies that come out these days" comments. But I quite enjoyed the game. As a fan of story-based adventure games, I don't require action. And while the characters looked way too robotic, I was quite impressed with the level of detail (I game on a computer monitor hooked up via HDMI. Being close to the screen like that allows you to really take in the detail.) And while the story is no masterpiece, it was enjoyable for me. I had fun. And the trophy hunting was fun.
