Forums - General - College degrees are a waste of time, money and effort.

It has been shown that the higher education a person has the greater money they will earn over a lifetime. Learned that in college. Also the bachelors degree is becoming the new Highschool diploma if you wan't to make it above poverty levels, so get to cracken the books kids because you have a long ways to go in school to ensure financial stabability.

i can see this as true considering i've been sitting on mine for the past five yr's? i've had all kinds of other jobs and even applied to the same company for the past 8 yr's (i started while i was attaining my degree) with only one interveiw while i was still in collage.

i'm not going to talk about the reason other people use as the reason why cause i don't think like that!

i am going back to collage, but i do fill like i wasted my time!

It sucks to as more people are returning to school now and theres not enough graduate programs for everyone to join. So have you go a graduate degree?

Bachelor's degree is getting too pervasive nowadays. However, I think only 40 or 60% of adult population has one. The new thing to get is a master's degree, and even better, a PhD.

I went to college because there are many high paying low work jobs that require diplomas. For example, data entry, or admin.

Admin jobs pay 20$ an hour and you can only get one if you have a degree.

My motivation was to go to Japan to teach English. The only way to get a work visa in Japan is if you are a graduate. Now, teaching English in Japan pays 30 to 40k per year, pays about half of your housing cost, provides your transportation, and you only work about 20-30 hours a week.

Now, trade skills are pretty great too. I have friends that make much more than I do as skilled laborers. But you have to think of the trade-offs dude. They are laborers. Your body can only productively do those jobs for 20-30 years and then the prolonged stress on your body just decimates you. Bad knees, bad back, arthritis, joint pain, etc etc. Sure they may become higher ups, directors and such, or even start their own company. But the actual amount of work you have to do is much higher in a trade-skill than an entry level job.

Now, D21lewis did come out on a pretty good level, but keep in mind he did 2 professions in which his life was in danger. This is another way to get high paying jobs. Cops, firefighters, veterans, armed forces all get preferential positions when entering those kinds of fields. As a trade skill worker, you will never get the kind of job d21 has.

Anyhoo, I rode a full scholarship through college, so I have no debt at all and I may be a little biased, but keep in mind what a degree is. It's proof that you can put time and effort and resources into a long-term goal. It represents dedication and motivation. That is why a degree is valuable.

Also, cool story bro time: my friend took computer science and now gets paid 50$ an hour designing contraptions that can translate performance into data. For example, for a robot dog, they want to see how many pounds of pressure the legs are capable of pushing. So, he makes a set that holds the leg and creates a guage to find out the pressure. 50$ an hour. Compare that to the average trade-skill of taxing your body with carrying heavy loads and installing ductwork.

it's a technical degree in drafting. the good thing is that from that i can go into a associates degree program in game design, although i'm a little more parcial to business management. but i want to do both.

i plan to get a master in both if possible.

Yeah I have two majors Bio and Psych to make me stand out, yet I still think I will have to get a degree in computer science or definantly get a graduate degree. Hopefully people like college as I do because it can take a long time.

School doesn't hurt but after interviewing possible interns all day today, PICK A MAJOR THAT INTERESTS YOU.

If you're in the CS/IT field and you don't find computers interesting enough to learn stuff on the side, you're gonna be without a job for a long time. I had to eliminate three guys today because their school taught them ASP.net and they never bothered to learn PHP on the side. Unless they're planning to work for a Fortune 500 company, that ASP knowledge is virtually useless.

School is a great stepping stone but students need to realize that work is required outside the classroom to succeed.

Anyway, back to reading resumes.... sigh.

I lso want to bring this to you attention to ile under "do what you like":

Apparently they have stopped teaching coding in CS as well....

Private colleges are expensive but going to a state school is a lot cheaper. Going into science you need at a minimum a Bachelors degree if you want to go anywhere and really should have a Masters or PHD. I'm working on getting my Bachelors in Environmental Science and I wouldn't be able to get a good paying job in the field without it. If I want to run any projects, which equals more money I will need my masters.

I have a masters in info systems, and a bs in management.  I did 20-30 hours total contract work in IT in 2009.  2007 was the last time i woked full time in IT as a contractor (I was with IBM from 1997-2004).  Since being out of work, my student loan debt went from 32K to over 50K.  I can't get out of this debt, and they will garnish even social security payments.  After all this what I was able to get was part-time janitor work.

As for "going into science", how many science jobs do you think there are? As for running projects, you need experience.  And yes, if you do see you need a Masters, get it while working.
