Forums - Nintendo - THQ announces graphics tablet for the Wii

We were right, lol

I was right. Infact I guessed this right before E3, when they were talking about a brand new peripheral.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

You know, although this isn't particularly new, its highly likely that this idea could be expanded upon in various ways.

I wonder if Nintendo approved.

Yes,Nintendo approved because T.H.Q already said that they are planning a huge Multi-Million $ global marketing campaign that includes T.V Advertising,Online Advertising, and Social Media events and that Nintendo is working with them to make sure it gets publicity and Nintendo is making sure that they maximize the launch.

I have to say, my first reaction after seeing this was "meh", like TX109 put it, but then after thinking a bit further and read the comments, yes, this could have a big potential indeed!

Lately, it seems that I don't think much outside of the box, I wonder why...

And proud member of the Mega Mario Movement!

Since it isn't by Nintendo, I doubt there will be anyone besides THQ adjusting their games to support the udraw, which is kind of sad given the potential (I would think it would be relatively easy to do,  much much easier than, say, supporting motion plus).

On another note - lots of people keep hailing mouse/kb as the best combination for FPS. With a little imagination, couldn't a similar precision be gotten from something like the udraw? (not that I think anyone will use it for this).

Wasn't there a discusion on how MotionPlus software has been somewhat lacking. This uDraw tablet is going to be worse.

This could be interesting. At lot depends on what is developed.

I agree that other third parties will probably not develop for it though - not that they have shown an inclination to support other Wii add-ons released by Nintendo.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

I don't think it'll matter if anyone else supports this.

No one cared if their $200 Rock Band perphirals were going to be supported by other games.   No one bought Wii Fit just to get the balance board to play a different game (I hope), they got those games for the games themselves and they included the needed tools to play.

In the same way, if uDraw Studios is fun and inticing to play people will buy it.   They won't care if it's supported elsewhere but obviously at least two other games will be out to play with the tablet too.

I think that supporting this in games will be far easier than supporting motionplus, not only because of the type and amount of data (which wil be only x/y axis data) but also because using motionplus creates gameplay problems you have to overcome (1:1 precision needs to be toned down or the player will have to be a golf/tennis/sword professional to succeed).

That said, of course otehr developers won't support it. But actually, if it does well, imo it will get better support than the motionplus - not better support as far as support from other developers, but better support as far as the number of games developed for it (all developed by THQ)... That is of course If it does well initially.

If you mean exact 1:1, that isn't lacking, since most games would have to allow for general motions, due to people not playing every game the same way. So the lacking part is gamers thinking it's the tech that will make this, not the games.
