30 million wii in US alone

Nintendo’s internal sales figures show that the Wii™ video game system has now sold 30 million units in the United States alone. This significant milestone was reached in just 45 months. This further establishes Wii as the fastest-selling console in the history of the industry, reaching this milestone 15 months faster than the next best-selling console.

Wii launched in November 2006 and ushered in a new era of video games. The built-in motion controls of the iconic Wii Remote™ controller drew millions of new players to the world of video games. Kids started playing with their parents and grandparents, people got up off the couch and got active, and seniors and baby boomers formed virtual bowling leagues.

Plus some numbers about games

According to the independent NPD Group, the top 10 best-selling Nintendo-published Wii games in the United States (through the end of June) are:

4. New Super Mario Bros.™ Wii

6. Super Smash Bros.™ Brawl

I love how this news piece is extremely quiet.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

The Wii is still doing great in the US, still around or above PS2's pace during the year. Throw massive holidays onto that, and the sales become way beyond any console before it.

The problem is people have become used to 2008 Wii numbers, and now are seeing some extraordinary sales from the HD consoles (360 slim in particular), that it makes the Wii sales look lackluster. When it continues to outpace the PS2, though, it's hard to see the sales as anything but good.

Yeah to be honest wii's lackluster sales is due to EU and Japan mostly. Wii in USA is doing fine, but im surprised that the Wii might even be undertracked during july in the US which would be insane really!

Its funny that a console which is outpacing the PS2 isn't as dominant as the PS2 was between software or hardware sales. The Wii being only 800,000 ahead of the Xbox 360 or less than 30% relative to the Xbox 360s total YTD is pretty crazy in itself when you take it in contrast with that article.

It's well ahead in the USA, PS2 was ~23m at this point going by NPD.  In Japan it's actually not all that far behind PS2 either, only ~4m according to Famitsu.  No clue about EU sales though, but I expect Wii's likely ahead there also.

It's well ahead in the USA, PS2 was ~23m at this point going by NPD.  In Japan it's actually not all that far behind PS2 either, only ~1.5m according to Famitsu.  No clue about EU sales though, but I expect Wii's likely ahead there also.

Even if it is ahead in EU, recent sales show a rapid decline. The PS2 hit its prime in EU later than NA and japan, and i dont think the wii will hit be able to outdo PS2  numbers there

We might have undertracked it in July but it's hard to say with certainty. It could easily be a case of longterm undertracking by a couple of k per week. When you're talking sales of 30 million a differential of 200k isn't that big. Or Nintendo could be talking in real-time the day they made the announcement. I don't recall what it's called but Nintendo's second party tracking agency can track sellthrough down to a single unit. 45 months could be any time before August 19.

Proudest Platinums:
1. Gran Turismo 5
2. Persona 4 Arena
3. Wipeout HD
4. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
5. Super Street Fighter 4

Was quiet in the original news piece as well.
