imo, its gonna happen, maybe not soon, but eventually the PS3 will outsell the 360 worldwide. why?? because the price of the PS3 has been higher than the 360, but has still being outselling the 360 for a lot of the time so far. including the fact that theres a whole load of exclusives that we know are coming and a whole load we are expecting to hear about next year or at TGS.

Early... end of 2011... 360 will sell about 12M this fiscal year and Sony will sell about 15M... so next year PS3 will outsold 360 LTD.

I think the potential for Sony to outsell Microsoft is great especially over the next three years. Sure right now MS has the Slim effect which has boosted sales, they also have Gears 3, Fable 3 and Reach coming, and finally Kinect that is a big 2010 and early 2011. Then what do they have? Pretty much nothing, with no new Halo, Gears or Fable they have no new system seller.

Meanwhile the Playstation has a very strong lineup to match with Move, Little Big Planet 2, Killzone 3 and Gran Turismo 5. Those titles should help them weather the 360 storm this year. Then you got the Agency, Infamous 2, Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, Last Guardian, Twisted Metal, FF VS. XIII, and FFXIV which should help them. They also have Blu-ray which is getting better attach rates all the time, 3D, and the DVR kit not released in America. 

Kinect and 3D are the big wild cards, if Kinect is a system seller Sony faces an uphill battle but if 3D catches on at home like it has in the movies Sony is in a great spot.

I believe that because Sony has much better first party support, Japan locked up and a very strong presence in Europe and the Middle East (UK exlcuded) that they will be able to surpass the 360 Worldwide.

i agree with that. the only thing is even if kinect is a system seller it will be mainly the casuals picking it up and not hardcore. which means it dosent really threaten PS3 but nintendo. sony will have to weather the storm this fall, but MS have brought this storm because they've been forced to, not because they want to. kinect might be a huge success, but it dosent matter, because thats not targetted at sony's market.

I like how the title of the thread says "in about 3 years," which is likely to be the end of this generation.

We really can't assume anything.  Sony fans seem to assume the PS3 would dominate from the very beginning based on PS2's dominance alone.  I've always heard many comments that PS3 would sell longer ( last longer ) from the same Sony fans.  The PS2 went up against Nintendo's first DVD based console ( which had little developer support at the time) and against MS's 1st console ever.  The PS2 was in a unique situation because it was the right time, the right momentum and I loved that console.  Everyone did.  I honestly feel if MS comes out with a new console in 2 years and Sony doesn't they would be very foolish.  In fact I know Sony will make sure that this time they don't make the mistake of delaying and will be ready.  Honestly, both the PS3, XB360 technologically are far lacking.  Yes games are still  coming, but if anyone here does any reading in just a short year or so smartphones will be coming out that will equal the power of current gaming consoles.   What Sony needs to do next time is not delay ( even if you aregue the reason was good they did ), have strong developer support ( this means also using a language that is easy to write for - cheaper and shorter game development time - and folks harder to program doesn't equate to the myth of stronger hardware) and keeping the price low to the gaming masses.  PS2 was in the perfect scenario, which comes rarely.  It was the right hardware, at the right time, the best back then.  And even when PS3 came out, the library was so huge and they could drop the price to 125 bucks and people who never previosly owned consoles bought a PS2.
