"The problem with the PS3 and PSP is that they are "multimedia machines", not consoles"

This is not the problem. The problems start when the gaming part is hurt by a focus on the multimedia capabilities. Multimedia capabilities per se are great. I mean look at all the messaging, friends-list, online-community additions to the new consoles. Or the Wii with its weather channel.

No, the problem is they aren't selling as well as their competitors.

Yeah, and because they dont have amazing games either. One of the reasons why they dont ahve amazing games? becuase not everyone that buys them buys them for games... This is one of the reasons for the PSP. The PSP has sold over 27 million, but it doesnt sell that many games, and this could be due to the fact that theyre not being bought just for their gaming features, but also their multimedia ones.

@Kyros: Yeah, thts what i mean :P

"software sales for first party and third party have been amazing everywhere, not just japan."

Last weak in others there have been 20mio DS userbase and 900k games vs. 2,4mio PS3 userbase and 600k games or 4.5m Wii userbase and 1,1m games. Solid but not amazing.

"So no, i highy doubt that Mobile Phones cut into the same market, as they are totally different things. "

I think the same applies for DS vs. PS3/360/Wii. They just don't cut into the same market.

The PSP is doing really well, but when you look at the DS numbers, thats another story.

I really don't know if I should be surprised by the success of the DS or not. It's got a cool design, great games and is a great system for the price. To top it all off if you remember technically the GBA was the second place system of last generation over all. So all those elements combined makes the DS a force to be reckoned with. I'm still waiting for that bar to hit 70% though. Thought it would by now.

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.

The interesting thing about this is that if you go to metacritic.com and take a look at the psp games vs. the DS games you'll see the psp has more "AAA" status titles -_-; I love hearing that the PSP has no games, did I miss the memo? Anyways, it's only Sony's loss anyway, I'll NEVER buy a DS, I only want 1 game for it... I bought my PSP as a "multimedia" device. I just "happen" to buy games for it occasionally. So a device I had no intention of buying games for ended up getting 5-10 purchases. Good for Sony? Not really, good for Nintendo? No, because I won't own one. People that buy the DS buy games, that's its only quality function, I just wanted more with my money.

Other than that though the topic creator REEKS of fanboyism. Did you really have to include "Crush the PSP?" I'd say for Sony's first video game hand held battling this "beast machine" and doing this well? That like the College basketball team beating the kinder gardeners 70-30 -_- (impressive but not really)

But my Sony Bias aside, Good news for the DS :P hopefully it continues to do well :) On a side note I wonder how well the PS2 will do this christmas :D

Since I live in Europe I wonder if the ds is currently being mass marketed in the states as well. I can hardly switch on the television without seeing brain, eye, penis training on the ds.
I mostly watch programing aimmed at 16-35 year olds or sports but I have never seen a brain training commerical.  I saw a couple Zelda and Eye training ones but that is it.  So, as far as I am aware, no.

currently playing: Desktop Tower Defense (PC), Puzzle Quest (DS), Trauma Center New Blood (Wii), Guitar Hero III (Wii), Ghost Squad (Wii), Actraiser (SNES), Donkey Kong County (SNES), The Legend of Zelda (NES), Kirby's Adventure (NES)

will play next: Paper Mario (N64), Golden Axe II (Sega), NiGHTS (Wii)

If they are being bought for their multimedia features, then their poor sales (by comparison to the DS) are clearly telling Sony that the market doesn't give @#$& about multimedia features.

If they are being bought for both, then the market is clearly sending the message that the DS's gaming features alone are better than the PSP's entire package.
