Toshiba takes European lead over Sony in HD

By Maija Palmer

Aficionados of European cinema who would like to watch films such as Roberto Benigni's award-winning The Tiger and the Snow in high definition, may, for the time being at least, have to buy a HD-DVD player rather than a Blu-Ray Disc machine.

A number of European independent film studios and DVD production companies are opting for Toshiba's HD-DVD format over the rival Sony technology, thanks to a strong support programme by the HD-DVD camp and concerns over the price of Blu-Ray technology.

I am well aware that European movies will hardly produce any noticable effect, but I have the general impression that also European distributors of US blockbuster movies prefer HD DVD over Blu-Ray. I don't have any proof for this statement at the moment, though.

Tiger and the Snow ?Crap film .

In any case ,HD-DVD doenst have many presence here .BR data has improved X30 since the PS3 launch .I doubt any distributor or producer wants to produce movies solely for the bruised and beat up HD-DVD.

Of course, forgot to mention that, sorry.

hddvd geting killed in sales. Week ending March 25, 2007 YTD: BD 100/ HD DVD 44.44 SI: BD 100/ HD DVD 84.07 What does that mean? YTD (year-to-date): in the period from Jan 1, 2007, to the date shown above, for every 47.37 HD DVD units sold there were 100 BD units sold. SI (since inception): since the inception of both formats (April 2006 to the date shown above), for every 89.25 HD DVD units sold there were 100 BD units sold.

I see a lot of conflicting inforamation lately ( the HD is winning, NO NO the blu-ray is) so just to clarify things, the blu-ray is dominating in the USA, and HDVD in Europe.

This is apparantly b/c of Toshiba's discount on its HDVD player, as the Europeans don't have as high income as the americans, and they would be much more likely to just want the cheapest offering..... sony needs to get its stuff in gear if it having dominance in only America isn't "just good enough"
