the perk is that you can turn it completely off dood, options is a wonderful thing when implemented right that anybody can use the technology.

That doesn't really negate that fact that A) I still had to pay for a feature I wont use. B) developers have to spend money and time developing a feature I wont use. C) It all could amount to less number of games being released.

Are you one of those with eye problems that can't see 3D?

That particular issue is not really a problem. I kinda don't care what 10% of the population can or cannot see or do.

Then there is no issue, if you are also a PC gamer, then you must know that it doesn't take much to get games to work in 3D since you can easily install iZ3D drivers and make most games work in 3D with anaglyph glasses already.

That nice... I only buy PC games through steam as well. I'm not sure how that pertains to my post, unless you are suggesting that all people can 'just double click in steam' and that magically makes their PCs work better. Consoles are consoles because the necessary knowledge and costs in playing games tends to be less than on a PC.

It's really pretty easy these days, and it's about the same price if you shop smart on Steam. Windows 7 did make things more idiot proof apparently. the complaints has always been having to install shit, configure them, but with steam, you just click stuff and let it do the work, and if you don't know about settings, either do optimal or don't bother and it'd still look at least as good as consoles if not better with modern games. I do live in the US where PCs can be quiet cheap though, not sure where you are.

I was strictly talking about the hardware to begin with anyway. Which imo requires more maintenance ( $) and can be higher cost for a basic system ( $) than most consoles typically are. I live in the US as well. But ultimately like I said, I choose PC version of multiplatform games over the console version, which is why my X360 has almost as much dust on it as my Wii.

Wouldn't they be designing games with 3D in mind? If they are just 'slapping' on some render effects its even worse of a gimmick than I thought.

to address the kinect and move aspect of the topic, MS is trying to expand where Sony is trying to absorb.

MS is trying new things, trying to get new types of gaming, and Sony is simply trying to make sure that if a game is released for Wii it is just a short port away from ps3.

If anything, MS will be the one to abandon the "counter-culture" in the attempt to capture expanded market.

Neither of those are true. They are following this.

Nintendo is a disruptor, so the incumbents will either do a growth driven co-option (Microsoft) a defensive co-option (Sony) or cede the market.

If the game's world is modeled in 3D, stereoscopic 3D is as easy as making two different 2D projections of it, that's what your eyes do anyway. If the drivers are decently done and points of view and angles are correctly set, it shouldn't appear "slapped" on it, what could give a fake and cheesy effect is exaggerating angles and virtual cameras distance instead of using the natural average values of human eyes, to make the 3D effect stand out more, but it doesn't depend by design difficulties, just by a wrong choice of parameters. Obviously you don't just need the drivers, but that the game uses them, but anyway is a very final stage, the 3D game world is "upriver" of its rendering, with 2D you just take a 2D projection of it, with stereoscopic 3D you take 2 of them, all you need is just more computing power, a little more in the CPU, roughly double in the GPU if you want to keep the same resolution, detail and polygon count.

OTOH holographic 3D will require a very bigger amount of memory and computing power, but we are still very far away from it, and it won't be compatible with current techs.

I suspect that Nintendo will still be the frontier unless 3rd parties are really throwing in resources this time around, we'll find out about a year or two in the life cycle, I think it looks promising personally.

a PC isn't only for games though, before I got all new parts for my current machine, the last time I did any real upgrade was 5 years before and maybe a new video card every 3 years at a non prime price. Granted that a PC will cost more, the much cheaper prices of games in the long run and a lot more functions to use it for is the real value of a PC, best part is you don't worry about backwards compatibility with most games these days as people can still play games even from the DOS days. I say sell the 360 and Wii if they are collecting so much dust =P. I sold the 360 personally and I don't regret it at all.
