WoW subscriptions are down? I thought it would be around 10.5 million by now...

No, that's still an increase, it's just a very slow increase at this point. I expect another surge for Wrath of the Lich King (to 10 million+ subscribers) followed by slowness or even decline afterwards.

There are far fewer than 10 million subscribers on WoW.
Bliz counts "subscriptions" as people who have subscribed, not people who are still subscribed.
The churn rate for WoW is the unknown here.
"I mean, c'mon, Viva Pinata, a game with massive marketing, didn't sell worth a damn to the "sophisticated" 360 audience, despite near-universal praise--is that a sign that 360 owners are a bunch of casual ignoramuses that can't get their heads around a 'gardening' sim? Of course not. So let's please stop trying to micro-analyze one game out of hundreds and using it as the poster child for why good, non-1st party, games can't sell on Wii. (Everyone frequenting this site knows this is nonsense, and yet some of you just can't let it go because it's the only scab you have left to pick at after all your other "Wii will phail1!!1" straw men arguments have been put to the torch.)" - exindguy on Boom Blocks

No, this is incorrect. They only count active subscribers, and have been very clear about this.
Blizzard's operating income for the year is 511 million. That's more than EA has made in the last two years combined, as a reasonable comparison. And Blizzard only has 1 game that they're actively supporting: World of Warcraft.
The game really, honestly, genuinely is that huge: almost 10 million ACTIVE subscribers.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.
I wonder how many billions WoW has made? I wish Blizzard had separated a lot sooner. Vivendi has been feeding on the gravy train too long.
Videndi is still feeding on that gravy train. Vivendi Games division has simply been renamed, and restaffed.

It is worth pointing out just how wrong you are here. As Bod has already stated that is completely wrong. More important is the fact that Blizzard is the only MMO company that has anything resembling a clear definition of what a subscriber actually is. They do use China and Korea to pad their numbers even though the subscription model is completely different over there. They do not count inactive accounts, however, and that is clearly stated everytime they have a new high.
I'm surprised one of the big 3 hasn't approached Blizzard to make a WoW game (or something similar) for console.
