I think both images are different. I see Samsung as being seen as 'Quality, popular, good value for money' wheras Sony imo are seen as 'luxury.'

Interesting figures here though, basically disproves a lot of stuff in this thread. I don't think Samsung rising over Sony has as much to do with Sony losing market dominance as you may think.

Before Recession - Samsung Revenue = $80B

After Recession - Samsung Revenue = $170B

The recession was one key to Samsungs huge success nowadays.

Look at Apple, they have the 'luxury' products and they are quite successful. There are plenty of people willing to buy goods perceived at quality regardless of a recession.

Well yeah, but Sony's revenue has basically stayed the same - so Sony aren't so much selling less. It's their profitability that's took a massive hit.

But still, Samsung sold more during the recession due to their location, and prices. Sony suffered a lot in the recession due to their pricey nature and location.

Apple's success during the recession was down to the iSheep and the way they are seen to have brought out innovative products. Apple are just in that phase where nothing will stop people buying.

The people you call iSheep are probably the very same people who bought Sony products in the past.

How did you come to that assumption?

Brand name. The power of the brand is everything. In the past, Sony owned the brand name in consumer electronics, many people bought Sony products because that's the name they thought would be best. Now that has shifted to Apple.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

What's even more amazing is 10-15 years ago Samsung was considered by many to be a junk brand.  They now produce some of the best and most reliable consumer electronics on the planet.  And their pricing is still very competitive and usually a little bit cheaper than products of a similar caliber.  Just shows what good management, R&D, and customer loyalty can do in short matter of time.

And even still once you have general figures you can't compare both electronic departments since a ton of other business segments are included.

Laughable.

Then get the numbers for their electronics department and compare the right figures... Anyways, it is pretty obvious that Samsung is kicking Sony's ass in the electronic department.

Yes, right. The OP contains the exact opposite.

Samsung is doing better, yes, but how is it clear it's kicking Sony's ass when the consumer electronics departments of both companies is equal to or less than 50% of both businesses?

Just for you my friend.

Sony

- SCE has so many studios under its belt: Japan Studio, Media Molecule, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Santa Monica, to name a few. Sony has the largest number of high quality first party game studios in the big 3, although not as profitable as Nintendo (Pokemon Studio overkill any of the Studio mentioned before).

Sucker Punch is 3rd party.

Also, while Sony has the most studios (barely I might add, just one more than Nintendo), Nintendo actually has a similar amount of staff within it's studios (EAD is HUGE, with near 800 people and 6 sub-divisions, bigger than Sony's largest 2 studios put together).  They're about the same size overall, while Microsoft employs probably about half as many people at it's game development studios (though Microsoft's been expanding rapidly in recent years).

Sucker Punch are 2nd party, surely?

And Microsoft have closed down almost as much as they've expanded...

this only happened because sony made the playstation. Samsung concentrated on their tvs and made them better than sony. Sony had to play catchup for a while but I think they are on par now again.

Because Apple have built such great TV's and Stereo systems lately? Its rather that the market has changed and leaned heavily towards multitasking products such as smartphones and companies like Sony have fallen behind in those segments. Also, Apple are really good at convincing people that;

A: Their products are absolutely essential to own and you have a great need for them , and;

B: They're not expensive, its the most advanced product after all!

Personally, I have fallen behind the market myself and I don't see the need for a multitasking phone or apparatus just yet. I have a digital camera, I have a good PC, I have a TV and gaming consoles so I don't need all that on a phone that does everything half-assed. Jack of all trades and master of none indeed.

The most shocking part of the Apple pie, though, is how they can get away with not only the ludicrous prices but also the shitty customer service and extremely closed business models striving to create a monopoly.

Apple was rated highest for computer tech support.

Sony and MS have been just as guilty for creating closed standards. I remember when Sony forced atrac and wouldn't allow MP3 on their devices, which turned out to be a huge blunder.

apple success its due marketing. not because they make the best product, sony walkman mp3 player battery life, sound quality, noise cancelation are way ahead of apple offers.

and USA buys apple products regarless the quality, look at iphone 4 sales and it doesnt even work well as a phone, with is flawed antenna and low reception

2nd party is a made up term.  Nintendo created it to "explain" their relationship with Rare in the mid 1990s.  All studios are either 1st party (internal and/or owned) or 3rd party (external and not owned).

Microsoft did do a lot of closing from 2006-2008.  They've been slowly building up since then, and not just with new studios like 343 or Good Science, but also expanding established studios like Rare and Turn 10.

Anyway, full list of active software R&D studios for each... actually counting them up, it looks like Nintendo has the most (I must've been thinking before the Liverpool/Evolution/bigBig merger)! :/
