Forums - Gaming - Why is their a news piece about NSMB being fastest game to 15 million?

RCTjunkie said:

You do know they address it IN the article:

It is by far the fastest time any game has reached 15 million units on a single platform. Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, available for the two HD platforms - which have a slightly bigger base than Wii - reached 15 million units combined at an earlier date than New Super Mario Bros. Wii while launching at roughly the same time primarily on its enormous 8 million unit launch week. However, NSMB Wii holds the record for fastest title to reach 15m units on a single platform.

I swear, some people need to learn to read... -_-

Ironic, if you actually read the whole thread you would know people already acknowledged this.

There is no "grief" why must you be so patronising to me Khuutra?

It's perfectly resonable to bring up, it's initiated a good debate, several mods have posted (thus agreeing the topic is fine), nobody has broken any rules (a part from one guy)

At the end of the day, I felt it needed to be brought up. I already said why I'm not going to Brett, he doesn't need to be bothered with this when he's working on 3.0. And Source ignores my comments in threads and walls. He felt he already justified why he didn't add MW2 in his article so anything I say would be meaningless.

We're not NeoGaf, the beauty of VGC is we can debate the numbers, (and thus articles) as long as we have something meaningful to back it up, I've heard Brett say this several times.

Furthermore I havn't slated the site in anyway, the article is fine, it's the title that gripes me.

That isn't what "patronizing" means, either. I can be accused of many things, but being patronizing is not one of them.

I don't care about your justification for it; the implicit approval of the mods does not change the fact that it comes across very unprofessionally.

But who has time to read all that. ;)

Wow, 13 pages!? People sure like to make a fuss about simple things

Above: still the best game of the year.

I've updated the article. The title is staying though - can't fit in "fastest game on a single platform to reach 15m" not enough room in the headline after experimenting with it for about 10 minutes. The main thing is I had forgotten Modern Warfare 2 had an 8 million launch week. It dropped like a rock after that (relatively speaking - still huge figures) and so if we were to look at it this way:

Game                  Week One        LTD as of June 26

X360       MW2                  4.8m                         11m

Wii          NSMB                 2m                              15m

Obviously there are very different patterns for the two games. Multiplying week one by seven fold in 7 months is amazing, as is a 4.8m debut on a platform that had fewer than 40m users at the time. If you throw in the PS3 version, then yes, Modern Warfare 2 is faster but I don't see a reason to punish Nintendo for only releasing its games on a single platform while most publishers need several. By that definition, it is the record-setter for fastest game / fastest exclusive as the two MW games are slightly different, both recieved huge advertising budgets, etc. My guess is NSMB Wii will reach 25m faster than MW2 will reach 25m on PS3 X360 due to the nature of how they're selling and competition in the shooter arena - at that point this argument will look silly.

Hopefully Brett will add the software comparison charts, as it would have been easier to find my error that way.

I know several people off the top of my head who would LOL at that Khuutra.

I find misleading titles to be unprofessional, that's my view anyway.

Thanks that's all I wanted to hear, and thank you for updating the article further, I understand if you can't change the title due to character limit.

They would be using "patronizing" incorrectly too, then. You can call me many things: prideful, sanctimonious, mean-spirited, arrogant, angry, narrow-minded, rude, and many others, but accusing me of being patronizing is patently incorrect, especially in the context in which you used the word. You used it incorrectly.

The Source is here: now you can argue with him directly. Have fun.

For the sake of the discussion:

Do you think splitting SKUs is the superior way of doing it? If so, why?

I know The Source is a big fan of the Wii and not so much the HD, but MW2 is A game, and it reached 15 million in 8 weeks, much faster than NSMB

VGChartz lists games according to separate SKUs. It's the fastest single SKU to ever hit 15 million.

That's all there is.

The Pokemon games are not seperated.

The Call of Duty games are.

I don't take responsibility for the way the site presents its sales, I just point out that The Source is being consistent here.

@Seece:

This is not a debate. No part of this topic can be called a "debate".

I'll agree with that last point. No consideration is being given to either side's points. They're just talking past each other.
