Sigh @ Selnor.

You do realise that the PS3 will be able to display 3D on glasses-less TVs too, right?

May not actually be true. Chances are, it won't be true.

The tech are different, in that, even the 3DTV from different companies requires different 3D glasses to work properly.

There was a piece of news some weeks ago that you could wear the 3D glasses upside down to make it work with another company's 3DTV. Don't remember which ones though. Probably Samsung and LG.

You confuse the actual 3D content with the 3D processing method.

As probably the only person around here who's used 3D on the PS3 and 3D on the 3DS extensivel (maybe the only person who's done either) I can tell you it's a pretty big difference. Those shaded 3D glasses you're going to be wearing to use 3D on consoles dulls the picture, and are especially noticeable and uncomfortable if you, like me, wear glasses already.

The 3DS is the most clear and crisp 3D I've ever seen, and there's zero image or color distortion. Obviously this requires you to somewhat center the image from your viewpoint, but I was able to hold it comfortably in numerous positions and get a zero-distortion picture. Whether Sony is happy about it or not, at the moment Nintendo has a technology that is better than their 3D technology, and cannot be used on 3D TVs because of the distortion from non-centered viewpoints.

It's too bad, but 3D with glasses is not a comparable experience, at the moment, to what the 3DS offers. It's not as comfortable, and it's not as effective.

Edit: As for people touting glasses-free TVs, those do not function. You have to be within 10 degrees of the center of the TV to get a clear picture on them, which obviously makes their use in a living room setting... well, nonexistent. Those will never take off under current technology used in them. They are trash.

That's great! I was thinking that the 3DS would have a"worse" 3D than the one those awful glasses offer - thinking that that was the price you had to pay for not using them.

Then the 3DS has the best of both worlds (quality and confort)! It'll be huge indeed, now I'm even more sure of it.

I wouldn't be too confident as far as confort goes.  All hands-on reports state that the viewing angle is really narrow (hence the reason why this tech isn't in our living room right now yet) and that although easy to get to that "sweet spot" it is also easy to lose it if you don't absolutely look at the screen head on .  You'll have to get used to the right hand and head position to see it flawlessly.  That may end up being a problem for extensive playing sessions.

I never got it whats with all the glasses hate... the only problem I have with them is the fact that they are dman expensive. I never even npoticed anyone looking goofy or complaining that they are heavy and/or irritating. 3D can expand in so many ways, so if it goes both with and whitout glasses, then its great for all of us

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

Sony is just pissed that they have invested in potentially obsolete technology.

Bingo.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

I'm pretty sure Sony is investing as much in the glasses less tech as any of the other major manufacturers.

But just like with all those major manufacturers, their glasses-less 3D tech is just not "there" yet, so they're pushing the alternative for the 3D enthusiasts who don't want to wait years before they can get the 3D from movie theaters that they became fan of.

This is not unlike any technology advancement out there.  Everything gets better and better if you wait a few years.

Nothing wrong with that though. We're all playing on consoles that become obsolete after 5 or so years, for example.

LCD TVs had awful motion blur and Plasma TVs had fast to get and irreparable burn-in at first.... They've gone a long way now, but it still didn't prevent a lot of people to adopt those tech early.

I find it rather funny that people are defending this article, 3D PS3 games can be played on glasses free 3D TVs, only issue is the people making glasses free 3D TVs isn't Sony, the whole idea is centering around Sony making various products that support their other products, so they must dismiss any comments that would break that cycle, it goes a bit like this.

Get a PS3 -> 3D Blu-rays and 3D games, if you have the 3D Blu-rays and games you need something to play it on so...

3D games and movies -> 3D TVs, this is where they want you to buy THEIR TVs and various products they produce.

Nintendo states its more convenient to the user to have glasses free 3D, people are likely to listen... who makes glasses free 3D?  Nintendo with 3DS and Intel's 3D HDTV, and it breaks the cycle of buying Sony brand which isn't what they want.

would be bet on sony NOT making a glassless free tv in the future?
