Forums - Sales - Wii outpacing PS2 software sales!

Reggie Fils-Aime says sales of Wii games are ‘dramatically higher’ than PS2’s were at this stage in its life cycle

Nintendo of America’s COO and president Reggie Fils-Aime has attacked the belief that sales of Wii software are tracking below the industry norm.

Speaking to investors, the colourful exec claimed: “Life-to-date software sales for the Wii are dramatically higher than a similar point in time for the PS2. As for where we stand versus the other two home consoles – again this is dramatically higher in life-to-date sales so far.

“I would ask what is the right measure in looking at what software sales should be for a platform. If you look at the number of million-unit-sellers, it is quite impressive. If you look at how we’ve had longevity in sales for titles like Wii Fit, Wii Fit Plus, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Mario Kart Wii, these are titles that launched multiple years ago that continue to sell exceptionally well today.”

Reggie does concede, however, that the vast bulk of Wii’s successes have come from first-party published titles. He acknowledges that more has to be down to help third parties prosper.

“I think the bigger challenge is how we enable our third party developers to have similar performance on the platform, have similar long-tail performance, have similar high absolute levels of sales,” he added.

“And we’re beginning to see that trend. You look at a title like Just Dance that started – and I think they would even say quite modestly initially, but has now gone on to sell multiple million units across the world. It’s those types of initiatives that will continue to drive overall software sales for the platform.”

How much SW has the Wii sold right now, after how many years? Can someone tell me?

Because the PS2 has shifted 1.5 BILLION units of SW, over a 10 year span.

Also, do his numbers include the 60 Million units of bundled Wii Sports?

I am pretty confident that most WII games are not good. Only games like mario, zelda and the other firts party games actually deserve such sales. PS2 games were of quality and that is something the WII can't replicate at the moment.

We're not tools of the government, or anyone else. Fighting was the only thing... the only thing I was good at. But... at least I always fought for what I believed in.

This is really impressive for the Wii especially considering that PS2 basically dominated in terms of 3rd party support.

Which just shows how much the video game industry has expanded this generation because of Nintendo.

you can and can't blame Nintendo on this.

its their fault that they made no effort for piracy and no effort to up their tech

and its third parties fault that they didn't do anything special for the wii.

Its a beast.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

I would say that is a fairly ethusiastic estimate of PS2 software sales, you are talking about nearly 11 games per system.

The Wii has currently sold close to 500 million units of software in >3.5 years but The Source has conceded that software sales for all three consoles are probably somewhat underestimated.
