Forums - Nintendo - Are you ashamed of playing Nintendo games?

No not at all.

The worst thing about being a fan of Nintendo games is that you have to explain why. If it comes up in conversation you're normally met with "but Nintendo only creates casual family games". Even when you explain they have a lot of great hardcore titles it just goes over most peoples heads. I just don't like people thinking they know better than me when clearly they don't... =)

No, I'm not ashamed.  The only people I know that fag out like a jackass about something like a Nintendo game being embarrassing are either

A) Kids 13-17, while they still actually give a shit about being "cool" and fitting in, anyone past that age that still does worries about that needs to grow up, get a spine, and learn not to care what others think

B) Dudebro, though they're generally under A

C) People so hopelessly pathetic that they actually think someone cares about what games they buy/play, forgetting the 9,999,999 other things that make them unbearable fucktards.

Seriously, embarrassed?

Yes, sometimes.

In the same way I feel a little ashamed gorging myself on steak whilst people in 3rd world coutries starve.

This feeling is unfortuately the maifistation of years of Sony (and before that, SEGA) marketing.  For how many years have we been bombarded by messages that Nitendo is kiddie, only children play Nintendo games, or that if you are a "big boy" your can play these other games that will give you affirmation about you being a tough, grown up who can handle "mature" games".

I am working on my M.A. in Psychology (research and analysis) and can spot some of these interesting tendencies that we funny creatures called humans are so prone to fall into.  In this instance, what is likely happening is the propaganda effect.  The "propaganda effect" is when reapeted exposures to a message, whether factual or erroneous,  leads individuals to believe the message more over time.  One can imagine easily that after years of advertizing that the desired effect has affected many people.

Thankfully, if you are aware of how some psychological processes happen you have a much better chance of not falling into erroneous thinking.

I actually think that's quite correct. I don't really have anything to say to that better than "well said", so well, uhm.. Well said!

never i see many adults buying mario galaxy and even games like onenchanbara bikini zombie slayer get bought by girls quite frequently in my local game store.

Not really, they are meant to be playable at any age, just like Pixar movies are enjoyable both for kids and adults.

Some games like Pokemon or Animal Crossing i am "ashamed" of playing but Mario Galaxy, never.

Hell no. I started on the nes as a kid,no as a 30 yr old adult I have all three systems and still love playing nintendo games. lol

Nope. I did feel that way about Pokémon when I was like 12, but then when I was 16 I realized that videogames are for all ages no matter what, including Pokémon. Besides, who cares what you play? and you shouldn't think about what other people may think about you.

You're too caught up in personal image. You shouldn't be concerned with the perception of the games you play and the things you do. My girlfriend and I love to play nintendo games together. In fact, these are the ones I'm least ashamed of.
