They'll return it to Sony where it generally belongs, and has typically sold better.

Just... no...

Handheld versions have just sold better and there's yet to be a handheld version of MH on anything but PSP...

I wouldn't doubt an announcement next year, if not a hint or something. They'd be stupid not to put MHP4 on the 3DS.

The question is when and on what console MH4 is released on.

Maybe they just drop the "P" and make MH4 for 3DS?  Why have two series?

Because there's no harm in having both when both sell a lot and people like consoles (especially in the West) over handhelds in cases.

Then why not just make the same game multiplatform, they have that MT Framework engine all ready to go?  MH4 for 3DS/PS3/360/Wii?  3DS/Wii cross-play?

Because I don't believe they should degrade and milk the MH series that much when it's doing fine as is.

I dunno, one game/series across three-four platforms doesn't seem more like milking/degrading than doing three games/series in parallel on four platforms (which is what we have now, MH3 Wii, MHP3 PSP, MHF PC/360).

The only main platforms are PSP and Wii. MHF is just a port, whatever. 1 handheld and 1 console is much better than everything. That would be just ridiculous and I can't help but think the quality of the games would be on varying levels. Doesn't sound like a good idea and they should keep the games on 2 platforms. Main ones on cosnoles, then the MHP ones on the handhelds obviously.

Well, the lowest common denominator would likely be Wii, but Basara 3 turned out pretty well and Wii was the base there.  Even going just 3DS/Wii I could see, if they wanted to continue the MMO route for HD/PC.  What I don't really see much point for is continuing the Portable sub-series after MHP3.  The only reason P3 split off is probably because PSP couldn't handle the water battles.

Why not? Console MH is for people who like consoles more (especially the West. And when it comes to online gaming, consoles are king. MH3 has a pretty big community) and MHP is better for Japan and also like an expansion. I don't see much reason to drop the console ones, not like MH3 hasn't sold a lot.

I think you misunderstood me, I'm saying with 3DS there no longer a need for a different altered release, like MHP3.  Just put MH3G on both Wii and 3DS, simultaneously.  Hell, they could even allow crossplatform play, and data sharing (play on Wii at home, transfer your data to 3DS and play the same game on the go).

Oh. Well, maybe that could work. That is if they even make MH3G...

But what about next gen? They need console versions and portable versions like this gen.

I'd say do MH4 on both Wii/3DS yet in 2011-2012, then save MH5 for Wii 2 and split the series again for handhelds (3DS? PSP2?).  MHP3 is really the first fully altered/original release handheld wise (MHP1-2 were both basically ports, 2G was just an expansion/remix).

i say a announcement sometime early next year with a 2012 launch.

MH4 WILL BE ON MORE THAN ONE HOME CONSOLE - DEAL WITH IT

MH Portable will be on 3DS by Christmas 2011. Wheres the PSP2? Why is there not even a rumour circling at TGS now? Its just not happening yet, and id hesitate to guess that the reason is 3DS tech. is too impressive to miss out on.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Dude, that's pretty weak to deliberately pick out three titles that sold below the Wii Monster Hunter.  That's like if I just selected Monster Hunter G on the Wii to prove that "they don't sell well on the Wii."  And I don't need to do that anyway, since my original point was that Monster Hunter sells better when associated with Sony.  For some reason, you seem to have read "Sony" in my post and assumed "PS2" and I meant Sony hardware in general.  Your comparison of Wii versus PS2 sales of Monster Hunter games does not address my original point, but rather, it sidesteps it for convenience.

http://gamrreview.vgchartz.com/browse.php?name=monster hunter

Monster Hunter Freedom 2:  2.42 million on PSP.
Monster Hunter Freedom:  1.43 million on PSP.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite:  4.76 million on PSP.

Monster Hunter Tri:  1.60 million on Wii.

Total (listed) sales of Monster Hunter on Sony systems:  9.75 million.
Total (listed) sales of Monster Hunter on Nintendo systems:  1.85 million.

Fans and consumers seem to consider the game a Sony title, and it has typically sold better with Sony, regardless of whether it's on a console or portable.  Sure, total (listed) PS2 sales are 1.14 million, but so what?  That's only .71 million difference from "total Wii sales."  Had Monster Hunter Tri been released on PS3, it likely would've been one of the breakout hits defining the system given it's earlier success on Sony platforms.

It's not about hardware association... MHP/2/2G didn't sell because it was on PlayStation system specifically (hell, it could be easily argued MH saved the PSP platform single handedly and made it viable in Japan), it sold because it's core strengths (impressive presentation, local co-op grind) align almost perfectly with PSP's attributes.  That's why MH will never be as big on consoles in Japan, because you lose the core social component (local co-op).  It's almost the opposite of the west, where social gaming is done chiefly online with HD consoles.

Even still, the series has done pretty well on consoles, and on Wii in particular.  MH3 is actually the best selling subscription based game ever in Japan, and MHG (a direct, 3 year old port, full priced and only playable with the CC) equaled sales of the PS2 version.  MH3 is also the best selling game in the series in the west, better than the PSP versions.
