They'll return it to Sony where it generally belongs, and has typically sold better.

Just... no...

Handheld versions have just sold better and there's yet to be a handheld version of MH on anything but PSP...

Dude, that's pretty weak to deliberately pick out three titles that sold below the Wii Monster Hunter.  That's like if I just selected Monster Hunter G on the Wii to prove that "they don't sell well on the Wii."  And I don't need to do that anyway, since my original point was that Monster Hunter sells better when associated with Sony.  For some reason, you seem to have read "Sony" in my post and assumed "PS2" and I meant Sony hardware in general.  Your comparison of Wii versus PS2 sales of Monster Hunter games does not address my original point, but rather, it sidesteps it for convenience.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2:  2.42 million on PSP.
Monster Hunter Freedom:  1.43 million on PSP.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite:  4.76 million on PSP.

Monster Hunter Tri:  1.60 million on Wii.

Total (listed) sales of Monster Hunter on Sony systems:  9.75 million.
Total (listed) sales of Monster Hunter on Nintendo systems:  1.85 million.

Fans and consumers seem to consider the game a Sony title, and it has typically sold better with Sony, regardless of whether it's on a console or portable.  Sure, total (listed) PS2 sales are 1.14 million, but so what?  That's only .71 million difference from "total Wii sales."  Had Monster Hunter Tri been released on PS3, it likely would've been one of the breakout hits defining the system given it's earlier success on Sony platforms.
