If they really thought so much about him, maybe they shouldn't have demoted him.

he was actually PROMOTED before RETIRING himself

also i think the trouble was that he was great at his work and liked his own separate PS department but for the DIGITAL ERA the departments of SONY needed to be interconnected which brought other people getting in the way so he didn't like that

The good ol voluntary retirement. That's what they do to save face and make a demotion look pretty. Here's your gold watch and pat on the back, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

It certainly did take a kind of genius to go from profiting $1b year from Playstation products to losing almost that much per year while in the same stroke going from 70% market share to 25% market share in the space of five years. Previous declines happened much slower.

(End Sarcasm)

As a figurehead of this site, shouldn't you at least pretend to be impartial?

An attack on a former Sony employee is not fanboyism or console bias in any way...Are you saying you like every single employee at Sony and would get along with all of them fine and dandy?

Its clearly more of an attack on sony's strategy for this gen and much less Ken. And besides, this more of a straw that broke the camels back moment than anything else.

Time for hype

Come on guys - he's just trying to get the whole scope in perspective here.  This article was begging for a retort as it doesn't acknowledge any of the huge business/financial failures that the PS3 caused Sony, of which Ken was pretty much responsible for.  If you had just had the most successful console in history and then had all of its profits wiped away within 3-4 years you wouldn't call that genius.

You guys are so sensitive - I didn't insult PS1 / PS2 games but you guys are pretending like Sony is the same monolothic power it was from 1996-2005 and attributing only the good to Kurtagi while ignoring the bad. What I said is true - PS3 and PSP have far lower market share than they were supposed to and have cost the company enormous sums of money. Again, I haven't knocked the games - but a fall from 70% domination in the PS2 era to a third of that with PS3, and claiming that PSP would take portable gaming out of the ghetto all reeks of anything but brilliance at forecasting the future. Get over it. Kurtagi was responsible for PSP and PS3 planning - wouldn't you laugh if I called Bernie Stolar of Sega a genius for designing the strategy of the Saturn depiste the hugely profitable Genesis in the prior generation. Come on.

Let's put it this way. Suppose the iPhone lost billions of dollars, Apple moved from profit into loss and at the same time the iPod went from 70% market share to 20% market share. You don't think Jobs wouldn't be under pressure to 'retire'?

You really think Kurtagi made all the great games for PS1 and PS2? All they did was provide a better model for third parties. When he didn't with PSP / DS, they've struggled. Same is true for Yamauchi / Iwata / Ballmer / Sega / Atari.

Everything you can like about PS1 / PS2 is tied to game publisher economics. It doesn't really have anything to do with Kurtagi. When all the third parties work together on a single platform its pretty easy to be powerful. Once they stop throwing their weight around in the same direction all that power dissappears. Doesn't make any of the hw manufacturers 'geniuses'.

he was who was making the deals and heading them all

Question -

Who created the PlayStation brand? A brand that dominated the market for a decade. A brand that has sold over 300 Million units (and rising) in 15/16 years.

And SOMETHING ELSE... You really think Ken and Sony didn't know that profits would go down the drain? Losing $200 at launch on a console expected to break sales records? It was obvious to me (and i imagine, Sony) that the PS3 would be a huge money loss.

I personally think the PS3 is more of a build up to the PS4. Cell and Blu-ray will both be cheap, and still more than good enough to use, by the time the next gen consoles are released. That way, quick profits PLUS bigger Blu-ray marketshare... Suppose we will see soon enough.

not really because of the loss but for the non integration of the PS and other SONY brands

I know, right! He totally didn't create arguably the greatest videogame system ever seen. Twice. Three times.

I mean, i bet he totally wishes that he was intelligent enough to try guess sales numbers for a single region once a week, and usually get them wrong!

(End Sarcasm)

Wait.... so he was the one who created the Nes and the Snes.... Oh my.... oh wait.

Well.... the greatest videogame system ever... that, you can argue and have different opinions.

Raw numbers.... something that you can't argue.
