Forums - Nintendo - So now that Nintendo is clearing DS stock......

I don't buy that Nintendo is trying to clear stock, I also doubt they will discontinue the DS anytime soon. With the XL only on the market for a few months I bet that Nintendo has some longer term plans. Also with several big software titles on the way for DS, several big first party titles like Pokemon and GoldenSun then I really can't see them jumping ship any earlier then 2012.

I think Nintendo is probubly phasing out the Lite and possibly even reducing numbers of DSi's on the market to enable DS:XL to sell a bit stronger!

In the end the DS is not going anywhere soon, despite the 3DS's appearance!

You'll still be able to buy a DSi on store shelves in 2014, that's my prediction. It'll have at least a 10 year lifecycle.

Discontinue a machine that prints money? Yeah... right...

If anything, it's to push more units out and the parts are much cheaper now to produce.

I think that the DSi XL was designed for the "expanded" audience, I mean people who plays games like Brain Training, Sudoku and stuff....those poeple won't probably be interested to spend much more money for a 3D console with better graphics (3DS), so till its price goes down they can still choose the DSi XL at a lower price, for some time (I guess about 2 years).

Still even if they are really clearing the DS stock, I don't see how not overselling  the ps2 could be a problem, DS its probably already the most succesful console ever it sold nearly as much as the ps2 in much less time, with probably less prodution costs, not to mention all of the multi-million sellers Nintendo has made for it.

The DS is at 130 million... IMO it will do ~ 160 million LT, maybe a bit less, but it will still sell for a couple of years to come Still, IMO the PS2 was a far bigger success, mainly because its a home console, and you only need one in your household...

I dont want to take away from the amazing success that the DS is heaving, dont get me wrong, but even if it outsells it by 10 million units, it wont be a big deal

it might not be a big deal to you, but it's a big deal to the rest of us.

so congratulation to DS for making it this far! here's hoping you become the highest selling game system ever SOONER rather than later!! :D

The only reason why Ps2 sold was because of the DVD craze back then..so yea. Ps2s always overheated and it always broke.

The DS has become a legacy in gaming. It outsold the Original Gameboy by 30 million units. The DS will be a very tough console to beat in the future.

I think the DS will keep selling for a few more years. I mean look at its price and it will shortly get its first pricecut in Japan after six years. The 3DS will probably be priced over the DS XL so it could be likely that people buy a cheap DS and wait for a 3DS pricecut.

I think that Nintendo will still keep the DSi and DSi XL out a little longer, since they are still selling very well and the library of games is excellent. Only when the next handheld becomes popular, will Nintendo discontinue the DS handhelds.

I imagine Nintendo discontinuing the DSi/XL in 2013/2014.

It's worth remembering that the GBA, which was considerably less succesful than the DS, kept on selling for a while after DS launch (sold about 21 million after DS launch, I think) and had another model released in that time frame.  If that is anything to go by, the DS will be selling for at least another 2-3 years.
