Forums - Sony Discussion - Who got MNR? and what are your thoughts on it?

I have always loved Karting games since the first time I played Mario Kart so was keen to pick this up and give it a try. So far I have been loving it, the customisation, the way the Karts handle, and the track designs. I havent really delved into the online mulitplayer part yet (still dont feel good enough or know the tracks well enough).

 

But there are a few things they could have done to make it better.

 

A battle/arena mode

Im not sure how well that would have worked, but I loved the arena mode in MK series it was a nice change from racing.

 

A Reverse Weapon

This is the main one for me, a weapon you can fire backwards or leave in your trail (like the Banana peel) so if your leading a race you dont feel quite as vulnerable or unable to defend yourself from those chasing.

 

On Screen rear view mirror

Why dont racing games have these any more? its a fast paced game with twists and turns, looking behind you is not always an option. A constant on screen rear view mirror should be on all racing games imo (with an optioon to turn it off for those who dont like it).

 

Stats

Things to allow you to improve the handling, speed of the car etc. So you dont feel so generic in performance.

 

The best parts of the game

 

The freedom to Create

Always going to be one of the biggest selling points of the game, like LBP you are free to create and customise your character, car and even tracks. Giving the game lasting appeal and a unique twist

 

The Shield

The shield is great for defending yourself, and its something you have to think about using carefully as it uses up another resource to use it (your boost).

 

Modcentre

I like the idea of the modcentre, with other players there looking around, leaderboard for best design cars and characters.

 

Other all, I enjoy the game, it is just another Mario Kart clone, but Mario Kart set the standard and if your going to emulate something try to emulate the best. Its not a Mario Kart beater for me, but its one of the closest I have come to playing and has its own strengths in its customisation that MK doesnt, and of course MK will only ever be available to those who own a Ninty system, so this gives a good alternative.

As with front weapons, mines also have 3 levels, the higher the level, the more durable and the bigger area of detonation for the mine.

 

I don't agree with the rear mirror thing. Karting games, because of their "fun factor" or "casual" aspect,  tend to be more or less impaired against the leader of the race. I don't see why it shouldn't be this way in MNR, where the leader has even more ways to defend and attack than in other games. On the other hand, because the game is not first person view "in-kart", the mirror wouldn't integrate well. That's my opinion of course.  Triangle button makes it's job perfectly. You add the fun factor of when you can press triangle without crashing against the next wall.

i wish there was more co-op modes like an arena and a 4 player tournament and i wish the campaign had co-op and i want to get XP in online split screen.... now that i think of it this game kind of fails at co-op



It's amazing and i feel this is the funnest game I have bought in a long time.

Around the Network

I don't own the game, but I've played for some time from a friend, it's a good game I agree with Brutalyst, I still prefer MarioKart but it's a good alternative (the first one since CTR and Diddy Kong Racing). Also I think that the creative/share aspect has got better, in LBP it took hours to create a decent level, and usually I wasn't able to have the same results I had in mind at the beggining, while on MNR the level creator is much more easy and quick to use.



absolutely adore this game. Mod was perfect, balance was great (if you get hit when you are first, it's your fault for not preventing it, unlike certain other game who gets blue-shelled).

people claim this game is too hard.... dude, just turn down the difficulty.


so many good maps uploaded already, I already downloaded 40 of them. uploaded 1 map. :)


Only complain: no split screen Cup mode, and the load-time could be faster.

there is a slight twigging of stats in the main menu when you select your kart. Be keep in mind that this is a ARCADE kart racer, not GT series. people playing this game care less about handeling it and most likely won't even know this feature

I love the game, its really well thought out, love the videos and the humour between the commentators. Also the controls are really good, i think they really improved them from the original beta.

starting to get the hang of modding, i'm putting together a Maclaren Formula 1 car and it's starting to take shape! my first success was making a helmet for my Mod with a Union (Jack) Flag on it.

The only gripe i have is the setting up of online games, it takes forever to find enough players to start a race, and i've only ever had 1 online race with more than 4 people in it. surely there must be enough people to start up 8+ person races nearly instantly.
