Forums - Gaming - 3D Gaming Won't Become Mainstream Until the Glasses Disappear. Yes or No?

We see Sony really pushing for 3D Gaming and Nintendo utilizing 3D Technology to it's 3DS.

But the question is, will 3D Gaming for Consoles become Mainstream in the next few years?

I personally don't think 3D for Console Gaming will become Mainstream unless the 3D Glasses disappear and this will happen when the 3DS takes off and becomes a global success just like the DS. I reckon Sony, Nintendo and MS should utilize tech like the 3DS if they're serious about 3D Gaming on Consoles. We obviously don't know how good the 3DS technology is going to look right now but the fact that it's going to create 3D effects without the need of glasses and using special cameras to project the 3D Images is very impressive.

And by the looks of things this Gen, 3D Gaming will use the 3D Glasses but once we see the 3DS succeed with it's technology, Next gen we'll be able to see Sony, MS and Nintendo apply the 3D tech to their next consoles. But until then, people aren't going to upgrade to 3DTVs rightaway and get into 3D gaming and Sony alone will find it hard to maek 3D Gaming mainstream.

What do you think? Will 3D Gaming become mainstream or will it not until the glasses disappear?

And you didn't make a poll?

The glasses needs to go, yes, but even glassless 3D won't become mainstream for a long time. There's still a lot of people with SD tv's, and many of them will probably switch to an ordinary HD tv before getting 3D. Unless 3D tv's become really cheap.

As soon as I posted the thread I noticed the poll was missing and I'm just like "OMFG"...

Oh well people can cope hopefully. We'll be able to tell whether it's a yes or no from their' opinions :D

This may be true but it won't be due to the 3DS per se. In it's current form the 3D used in the 3DS apparently isn't suitable for the large screens typical in living room TVs. They are going to have to find another way.

Ahhh I didn't know about that 3DS info. But it could be possible in let's say the next 2-3 years for the the 3DS tech to evolve and become applicable for consoles.

no, i think it all comes down to the price. Once the tv manufavturers put their prices for 3d tv close to that of regular hdtvs( and trust me they can technicellly already do this)then it will become mainstream.

no i think its the price....
if 3DTV costs as much as HDTV then why not??
i have a HDTV for like 4 years and have been wanting to upgrade.
anyway i just hope theres more 3D movies and games so that at least the 3DTV is worth buying.

the tech people are assuming the 3DS uses requires a camera and can only create 3D effects for a single person at a time, not exactly the kind of tech anyone would want for a at famlily home TV.  there certainly are glassesless techs that will work for mulitple users for at home TVs,...it just cost ~10 times that of the glasses tech even after you factor in the cost of 4x glasses.

i don't mean to be rude but there is a reason sony/samsung/lg/ect are all bringing glasses based 3D to the home...it's the only tech that's economically feasible at the moment.  nintendo get's a bit lucky with the fact that a handheld system has a ~4" screen and only one person looking at it at a time.  eventually we will indeed have glassesless 3D for the home but you're going to have to wait about 5-10 years to buy one at a reasonable price.

The price of 3DTVs matters far more.
millions of people watch 3D movies in cinemas and they don't care if they wear glasses or not.
