When they hit that $199 price tag :)
Exactly. And they'll reach that mark long before Sony ever will.

Neither one of these companies is even close to tapping the enormous price-consious consumer market and whoever does it first will reap the rewards (or, actually second behind Nintendo).

You gentlemen seem to forget that regardless of the lowest price tags in history, very few people wanted an original X-Box, why should the 360 be different?

The 360 has an image issue; it's an American product and will never shake that tag or overshadow it with any amount of great games or low prices. I don't think 360 sales will surpass X-box sales by much really.

I don't even think PS3 will even manage to come any close to the PS2 numbers.

This year was Microsofts ...with all the huge games they had ... and even in this way , and the huge price difference the PS3 could still hold up nicely . Than next year the PS3 will get his really , really big guns , plus it starts the year with a great suply and an acceptable price ... are you still thinking that who will be last ?

Very nice, very nice.
And sony are they making money on the PS3?

Sony recently admitted that they are losing money on the 40GB.

If a company admits to taking a loss on a product before it even releases, you can bet that the loss is significant, bordering on the side of insanity.

Why do people say the PS3 will have next year?

Its like people are saying 360 and Wii are going to die in sales and have no software. I totally disagree with your post.

You're completely ignoring the fact that the PS2 always had a larger marketshare and received price cuts first. The original Xbox was always playing catchup. This time around, the tables are turned on Sony.

I think ultimately the PS3 will outsell the 360 ww if not in NA. Question is, will it really be worthwhile for them? Sony made a nice profit from the PS2, but not as much over Nintendo's GC profit as you'd think. Obviously the Wii/DS are insanely profittable for Nintendo now, but Sony will be lucky to make even half of what the GC did in profit this generation.

I think the current loss-leading model will end with this generation.

allrighty then
next question : how much you guys think nintendo makes on a wii right now^^

Wow, PS3 beating the 360! I never thought I would see that, I need to come to vgcharts more often, it seems like the big "next-gen" war is heating up!

do you guys know if microsoft already makes money on the 360?

i mean for each unit sold?

Yes, Microsoft has stated that this is the quarter of the year they will be making profit.

According to WallStreet and the Financial Times they are not, and not likely to.

This can easily be confirm by checking recent reliable sources on line.

I personally don't think the xbox 360's last place finish, (this week by vgchartz)...all of November and December, by my predictions... means necessarily that xbox 360 is faultering.

But I do think that when PS3 is beating the xbox 360, and when the PS2, is in turn beating both the xbox 360 and PS3 (at least it did so in North American market)....its hard to not think of Sony, which has two products dominating the xbox 360, as doing somewhat better than microsoft.

Of course the Nintendo Wii is the real story.

But what I've noticed is, one week in last place...and you've been forever in last place.  One week in first place, and you've totally turned things around.....bunk!

It seems how the comments go, but in reality, this week is only marginally different from last week.

Sony did surprise me by moving so many units at $399...I thought they would have to dig deeper.

But I think a balanced, analysis, will show that Sony will turn profitable next year...Microsoft this year.

But that is only in the funny world of accounting...to actually, take profits that exceed the already accounted for multiple billiions in losses...both MS and Sony have a ways to go.

In terms of expectations, i have to say both MS and Sony are failures.  MS has only one system on the list at all, its in dead last place.  Even in north america, being trounced by DS, PSP, Wii, even PS2 sales...and thats their great market.

Sony, once dominate, giving up the lead to Nintendo...not by a little either...being trounced.

So in balance, Nintendo great.   Sony and Microsoft...respectable.  That's what I think anyway.  I don't understand the great enthusiasm for Microsoft, when Microsoft is generally expected to dominate a market, they've been in the video game market for many years, and they've failed to do that.

I do think that at the end of this generation that the PS3 will have sold more consoles than Microsoft but it will be alot closer than before. Sony will probably outsell them by 10-20 million mostly because of Japan. The big difference will be that Xbox will be safely in the black and the Playstation will have spent every profit they ever made on playstation in the past 10 years to fight Microsoft.
