Forums - Sales - Alan Wake's Low European Debut (88K) - Will it make a profit?

This whole scenario reminds of "Too Human," all hype and then BUST....MEGA BOMB.
Hopefully the American sales come out in its favor. It's a shame when a game that so much passion went into developing fail commercially, but i always thought that the hype surrounding this game was way too big.

Remedy need the game to make a profit, their studio's future is resting on it.

I'm surprised by it's low debut, I thought it would at least sell 150k+ in others first week. Both SC and AW have been commercially and critically a bit of a letdown in my mind, and I think Mod Nation Racers may be next.

Not that every game needs to get perfect scores, or that metacritic is the ultimate yardstick of quality, but scores in the low 80's for exclusives a long time in the works from studios with a strong pedigree is dissapointing.

It would be an awful shame for Remedy to get into financial problems, so hopefully the game will have legs.

Splinter Cell Conviction is on track to be the highest selling Splinter Cell on an Xbox product.

At the same time, I can see you're point critically, a lot of people (in the case of Alan Wake, myself included) expected them to be AAA.

I wouldn't worry about the game losing money.  It was in production for a long time yes, but with an EXTREMELY small development team.  This isn't Killzone 2.

Killzone 2 had a large team, nothing wrong with that.

You just took that one sentence completely out of context. Remedy is not as big as Guerilla, thus they wouldn't have to sell as many copies to make a profit is all he's saying. He didn't say anything was "wrong" with Killzone 2.

And I didn't say he said anything was wrong with Killzone 2. You took THAT out of context.

So what's the point of your comment then? Quit being so overly defensive of Killzone 2 when nobody's criticizing it.

If there's ever a poster on VGC that's in no position to ask people not to be overly defensive, it would be you. Stop making everything so dramatic, it's not that serious.

My point to him was, a good game can be made no matter what the size of the team. WAKE is an example of a good game with a small team, Killzone 2 a large team. Nothing more, nothing less. It had nothing to do with Killzone 2 itself, which if you weren't looking for something that's not there, you could have understood that.

Your comment is completely off topic for a thread about profitability, no matter how much you try to paint me as defensive or dramatic (it amuses me when people try to do this as if it strengthens their argument --what's up with the ad hominem attacks CGI?). I think starcraft knows that the size of a team has little impact on the quality of the game anyway.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

so Alan Wake flopped in europe

First ME2 and now AW, both sold way less then expected. Unlike PS3 exclusives lately Xbox 360 games are not doing well. Maybe because of piracy SP only games on 360 are sufring?

No its not. With the legs its heaving I doubt that it will manage to break the 3 million of the first game whitout heavy bundling

Oh, and your KZ2 remark. I dunno, they even made a small real time movie series for AW. It was in development longer then KZ2, and it will sell considerably less...

OT: the EU debute is lackluster I agree, tough with a possible 150k+ opening in NA, it could easily reach IMO 1.5 million LT. Its not a massive system pusher as some expected it to be, but IMO they could at least break even or have another shot at a sequel/create a franchise out of it

Who is surprised here ?

This game was overhyped on the whole internet because it was supposed to be the "BEST GAME EVA", the BEST GFX EVA, the best survival horror game that is so good that you DO NOT HAVE the right to call it a survival horror game (thx you Remedy for this last point)

also, the game has no online multiplayer which seems to be more and more important for gamers today ...

It is released close to RDR which is getting high praising

AND the pre-orders where showing us since numerous weeks that game will not have amazing sales.

Conclusion : plz port the game to PC and I will buy it. Thx you Remedy.

Were not talking about the following gamese

  • Uncharted 1/2
  • LBP
  • R2 (Remember that guy who said Its the best looking game of 2008? LOL!)
  • MGS4
  • Selnor
  • Westley Yin-Poole (He said Crysis 2 on 360 was better than PC crysis LOL!!!)
  • GT5
  • GoW3
  • Gears 3

But this game is incredible, The graphics are mind blowing.

Since when were these "overhyped" ?

There was that stupid "HUGE" Bullshit going around when LBP was gonna come out, it was supposed to move millions of playstations and sell a million first day.

GT5 is supposed to be the saving god of the PS3 for some reason, people are hyping it up like it was just announced.

UC1/2 is the best game ever cus its only on the PS3 and the graphics are amazing and anyone who gives it less than a 100 are Xbots.

GoW3 has amazing graphics and can only be done on the PS3 and blah blah blah. We get it the game is good no need to over hype everything.

Dude, how is this even relevant here ? its way off-topic.

These games were hyped, yes..because they are amazing games...

UC2, GoW 3, LBP all are 90+ on meta and overall fan reaction has been extremely positive, unlike games like GTA IV which received a lot of meh reactions from fans.

Why exactly is GoW 3 over-hyped ? It delivered on everything it promised imo, you haven't even played ANY GoW game and you label it over-hyped... Why ? And what position are you in to say that it is..

If my memory serves me correctly, you are the same guy who said Uncharted 2's graphics were average and the textures were bad. You also said Dante's Inferno had a better story than GoW despite not playing GoW.

You continuously say these type of things which you aren't in any position to say and get away with it....

On topic though,

Games like Alan Wake, inFamous and all which were pretty hyped and didn't get the review scores as fans expected are still awesome enough for some, but not so for others.

AW sales are mildly disappointing, yes. ioi expects about 150k from America first week...so around 250k Worldwide isn't bad and it will eventually get to a million...or even more if it has insane legs. Which is brilliant for a horror/thriller title that isn't Resident Evil.

1. no one said that AW is suppoed to be the best game ever with the best graphics, unlike those games above in the read. AW had little to NO hype on the internet.

2. GoW3 is a good game im sure, but people are acting like its a new Mario 64. GoW3 is the least hyped game among that list.

3. I said UC2 had average graphics, it was just colorful and yes DI actually has a Hero that isnt always pissed off and some big brute idiot.

4. Im in no position to say my opinion? Gee Wiz most of the people on this site say their opinion like its fact. I guess since im a 360 fan im wrong for that.

AW will do fine in the long run, like a stripper it will have long legs.

That is just false.

True...but you have no idea about what happens in God of War. In the surface, Kratos is a big bad brute that is always pissed off...but main character =/= story

You can say your opinion..but when that opinion is expressed when you haven't played the game in question (GoW 3) then what you say cannot be taken seriously as,

(a) You don't know what the hell the game is about or how good/bad it is

(b) Therefore you clearly cannot judge whether the game deserved/lived up to the hype it got. Hence, you are in no position to say that.

This is way off topic btw..

I believe that too...guess we have something in common

1. Prove me wrong, show me people saying its the best game ever and its the best graphics ever, not just one guy but i want threads full of people saying it and graphics are just opinions, like it or not UC2 doesnt have good graphics imo.

2. I dont care if Kratos has a story like AW, if i cant relate to him why should i give 2 shits about him?

3. I have played GoW1 and 2, i found them both boring as i knew nothing about gods back then. I know the story hes out for his family, blah blah blah cliche storyline. The gameplay in GoW isnt awesome so the story draws people, and im a person who cares for gameplay not story. People who like GoW also like MGS4, they both have basic  gameplay elements with a story as the main focus. Of course its all imo.

1. Go To GameTrailers.... LOL you'll find like a SHITLOAD of "ALAN WAKE BEST GAME EVARR!!" threads...

2. I Felt related to Kratos in some ways...and you can see the soft side of him in God Of War 3.... tell me, if you killed your family because the manipulation, if you're being used by someone else, if you've been betrayed by someone and killed everyone you knew in your life...you wouldn't be pissed off with all the fuckin' world at all times????

3. GoW gameplay isn't awesome, but it's good enough to make a good package...presentation + story + gameplay = game ...at least to me.

MGS4 BASIC GAMEPLAY??? WTF!? GO PLAY THAT GAME ON A HARD DIFFICULTY, THEN COME BACK...your opinion have very poor arguments.

I'm Back! - Proud owner of the best doomed handheld of all time!

Whenever someone says "this game will have legs" it usually sounds like the same old tripe. In regards to most 360 games too.

But I truly believe Alan Wake will get good word of mouth, some games I have expected to be a solid 90+ this gen, Bioshock 2, Splinter Cell ect, after playing I realise .. no, they were never going to be 90+. This is the first game this gen, that's score I don't agree with. I can't fathom how a reviewer would give this 6/10 because it took five years. IT'S IRRELEVENT TO THE FINAL PRODUCT.

You might not like horrors, you might not like shooters, but play Alan Wake, and you'll see it deserves no less than 7.5/10. All these 7's and 6's are from reviewers who review from entirely their opinion. Which never makes for a good review.

This is actually a good question, this game is bound to have had a huge budget with its engine being built from scratch, it was among the pioneer engines for multicore processors in its day and the development cycle itself has lasted many, many years.
Let's hope they make a profit, Remedy are very good developers.

If a game as critically acclaimed as Alan Wake is, combined with fanboy buzz, and other things (like screaming advertising on this site) ends up meaning it doesn't break a profit, that will tell me the videogame indusrty has serious issues in regards to its business model.  Maybe the industry can't afford to do games like Alan Wake, or stuff that are supposed to be storytelling epics.  It needs to target lower, and still get people captivated.

Anyhow, it is still early for Alan Wake.  Maybe it has something called legs.

what do you mean ? AW was overhyped. End.

Ask to anyone at VGChartz ...

and the 2 sentences that you are underlying are not linked together IMO ...

but, yes, bring the game to PC, this is were I want to play it.

I'm not saying it wasn't overhyped when going by metacritic.  I'm just saying you're falsely accusing the entire internet of going off the rails for AW with "best game eva" or "best gfx eva".  That doesn't mean there were ppl out there hyping it but be realistic about what you're saying instead of bringing everything to the utmost extreme about it.

I suggest someone put a leash and/or muzzle on selnor.  Because selnor comes on a forum like this, and yammers with too much hype, and then makes people think everyone is doing it.

I got it! Deadly Premonition must of total stolen the thunder of Alan Wake. Alan Wake doesn't have a Press X to Jason, or F K... in the coffee, so it must me DOMED!
