Forums - Gaming Discussion - Do any of the Halo titles deserve critical acclaim?

Halo is the ultimate "love and hate or indifferent" game franchise around the net. It's been debated if Halo was whether or not overrated by video game critics.

What do you think? Do you believe it deserves critical acclaim?

Here are the average percentage ratings of each Halo game from gamerankings.com:

  • Halo Combat Evolved: 95%
  • Halo 2: 94%
  • Halo 3: 93%
  • Halo Wars: 82%
  • Halo 3 ODST: 85%

If you ask me: I say Halo: CE deserved every single grain of praise it received, Halo 2 not so much, Halo 3 most of it but not all of it, and ODST and Wars receive the right amount of praise they've gotten. In fact, I've enjoyed ODST's single-player more than Halo 2 & 3's.

No replies? That makes me a sad panda. :(

The Halo Trilogy all deserve the praise and especially Halo :CE.

Halo Wars doesn't because it's a crap RTS. Consoles will never get a critically acclaimed RTS like Warcraft or Starcraft.

What you have to realize about the halo series is that the amount of fun you have playing is often related more to having friends over and playing split screen on XBL than it is about the campaign, and that kind of fun is hard to review or measure.

You do realize it wasn't "critically acclaimed" but received moderately positive reception from critics, right?

Yeh I know that. I read your OP and knew that prior to all this. I doesn't deserve those positive reviews coz it's a crap RTS. Like crap as in 'can't play crap'. And hence my latter statement, "Consoles will never have a critically acclaimed RTS game made."

Yeah there games are quality and multi player is always being updated.

Ah, I see. I found the game to be quite good for an console RTS, but if this game was on the PC, I wouldn't even touch it.

In light of how people continue to play the games so many years after their releases, I'd say yes. The series is not for me, but I can't deny its wide appeal.

They all deserve critical acclaim but I disagree with the majority in thinking that Halo: Combat Evolved was the best haha. Sometimes it simplicity was dull in my opinion especially when it came to level design. I think Halo 2 showed a developmentally better game than the original although had a weird storyline coming from the first. Halo 3 was a great game, although same issue with the second is the story line was rather weird. ODST was easily the best story line out of all of them to me. Never played Halo Wars though.

So yes I think all of them deserve their praise as they are beautifully crafted and designed games but I do disagree on some terms with how they are ranked intra-series wise as I think Halo: Combat Evolved gets a little more credit than it might deserve. But i was the first so I guess it does deserve it do to that "wow-factor" it brought in.
