Forums - Gaming - Games that receive a lot of undeserved backlash

GTA IV really didn't deserved such a negative backlash from most of the gamers, that game is so amazing, if you can take a step back and appriciate it without prejudice. I think it fully deserves it's 98 meta, because the city itself is so incredibly well made, that no other sandbox game haven't came half the way yet. You can spend hours just listening to the radio or watching the tv, than browse the city and search for the stuff you've seen or heard about. Living, breathing mass. Incredible.

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

Wind Waker. Many people ignore it because of the cel-shading, that is just wrong. The game is great and beautiful
I also liked the first Assassin's Creed more than most

FF8-FF13 :(:(
White Knight Chronicles

it's the future of handheld

Fable II, peter overhyped but it's not a bad game by any means.

Grand Theft Auto IV, ok 98 is too high a score, it certainly deserves the praise though. (fav game this gen)

Wii Music. I felt it wasn't intuitive or accessible enough to be a Wii-series game, but I think it would be entertaining to those willing to put up with the learning curve. Definitely didn't deserve the hate it received.

In the end, I think some people were disappointed with Nintendo's holiday 08 lineup. Being that Wii Music was the focal point of that, they took their anger out on it.

What games do you think receive a lot of undeserved negative feedback from the majority of gamers?

Here are my picks:

  • Halo (Despite the fact I'm only a fan of the first Halo)
Only played them at friends houses and never liked it so I can't comment.
  • Final Fantasy (Not a big fan of the series outside of VI, VII, and IV)
I loved 7,8,9. The story and charaters in 10 were brilliant but I didn't the linearity. 12 was a bit better but 13 is to linear and very boring.
  • Call of Duty 4 & Modern Warfare 2 (Despite my disdain towards Modern Warfare 2, the hatred it receives is ridiculous)
Call of duty 4 was good and it had very easy online play. Sadly COD MW2 was just really COD 4 version 2.0 and the single player sucked.
  • Resident Evil 4 & 5
Resident evil 4 was brilliant. RE5 could have been better
  • Gears of War 1 & 2
Only played in friends and didn't like.
  • Crysis & Crysis Warhead
never played
  • Street Fighter IV
I hate 2d fighters
  • Grand Theft Auto IV (Overrated by critics, underrated by the gaming community)
the game was great but it took a big step back from what san andreas was which is the best GTA game ever made. Thats why there was fan backlash
  • Chrono Cross
never even heard of it
  • Far Cry 2
It was a good game but it had a lot of problems

The problems with most of them was they were not the best sequels to game francise we all grew to love. Thats why there was backlash. Take Resident Evil 5. Everyone wanted the series to go back to its survival horror roots because thats what made them love the series. If thats what got people buying the game in the first and they take it away then of course theres going to be some backlash

FF XIII
GTA IV
Fable II
RE5
Halo

Too Human takes the cake.

Probably the second best game of the generation and it got tons of hate.

FFVII: A lot of the older more traditional FF fans didn't like what it introduced to the series. Madness I say :P

Oblivion: Again, older Elder Scolls fans don't like the "dumbing down". I say they just refined the formula. I hated in the previous ones that when I hit something, damage was decided by an invisible dice roll.

Crysis: A lot of people seem to think it's just about the graphics. It took what Crytek did with Far Cry and heavily improved it. Only the studio's second game, what more did you expect?

Prince of Persia (new one): I thoroughly enjoyed this game. Yes the fights were too simplistic but they acheived a game that didn't frustrate you even when you died (or were rescued by Elika). I think too many people have this perception that if you can't die it's not a challenge.

Tomb Raider Underworld: Was good fun, toned down the shooting for more platforming and worked better for it. The camera angles could be annoying but was a good game either way.

Modern Warfare 2. I can see why ppl can complain about certain aspects of MP but I don't see why CoD4 doesn't get that same bad rap. Both games aren't that much different when it comes to camping, guys.

Probably because it's the sequel. There's this expectation that a sequel will at the very least gfix some of the faults of the original.
