As awesome as a remake would be, I don't really want one. In all honesty, these games all blew me away at the time of their release. On top of that, I already know how they'd all end. The big draw in an RPG isn't the tech, it's the story. Unless they change the story, there isn't much reason for them to pump all of their resources into remaking the games. And, if they do change the story, wouldn't you rather have a new game instead of a snazzier copy of an old game? No matter what they change, we wouldn't be satisfied, anyway.

-the only exception is Resident Evil for the Gamecube.

Yeah i agree, and besides i think FF8 & 9 have aged very well compared to FF7, especially FF8's photorealistic look. but you know i'm sure they will get on this when they make can games of FF13 quality in one year, this crystal tools engine is designed to last the generation. and recently square have been rereleasing and remaking so many FF games.

or they cud use the ff13 engine on wii (ther is a wii version for ff13 engine crystal tools), they cud us wii ff13 engine to put ff7/8/9 remake on psp 2

First of all, the link you just provided me was to another magazine interview.  Not an investors briefing.  Second of all, stating to the press or stating to investors you want a game to sell a certain amount wasn't my main point here.  My main point was each title, they keep pumping more and more money into the advertising and funding of each game.  As if they EXPECT it to sell more.  They can say to either their investors, magazines or Jack Thompson for all it matters that they expect it to sell a certain amount, but their effort shows that they want it to perform better.

If someone sells 100 apples by putting forth $10 in advertising, and then turns around and sells only 80 apples with $50 woth of advertising, they can't say it was all 'as planned'

Yeah i think your on to something with that; i mean you really think that Wada, Kitase & the FF team said to themselves, lets spend all this time and money on a game that dosent exceed what we did before. i'm not saying they set out with the goal of outselling FF7, but i think it was something they had thought about. and i bet they spent loads on advertising.

i think it was on finalfantasy.net or somthing, i have heard rumours that wada wanted to surpass the sales of FF7, but he never provided a figure, i think after it became unrealistic he brought that figure down to 6 mil. in that release data trailer, Kitase said that FF13 will exceed all expectations and the presenter mentioned how FF13 was possibily the most anticipated game of all time. theres no doubt in my mind they wanted to top FF7.

I agree, with what your saying. because, ofcourse they wanted it to sell as much as 7 (if I'm not mistaken Square-Enix's) best selling game. You don't hope for it to sell less. And when you create something... just being an artist myself... sometimes you think you created something great, and then a lot of people don't like it etc.. so you get excited.

However, I don't know what wada does besides running the company or how much influence he has on the actual game. But Kitase and the FF team, were probably proud of their work so, you get a little hyped up, about what you did, granted... I love FFXIII to death, but I understand why many don't.

And one more thing. FF7 was the spearheaded (with about 5 games I think) of 100 million dollar advertising campaign paid for by sony. And I'm pretty certain that's the biggest ad campaign FF's had. And theirs rumors though I'm not sure whats true is that Microsoft paid for some of the FFXIII commercials.

@ Kenryoku, SE wanted FF to outsell 7 since 7 that's a logical thing to want. But that is not SE as a company expectation. They're not expecting it to outperform what they expect, because  their marketing people get paid to project sales, as with any company, and a responsible company which I'd assume SE is as they have made money for atleast the past 3 years. You don't base company prosperity on unrealistic goals.  Because It's irresponsible to be like  a baseball player thinking I'm going to hit a home run off this pitch, or I fail. That would be the equivalent to SE expecting it to outsell FF7.

Hell for 2 examples from nintendo that would fit your staggering decline definition are 3D mario, and Zelda

3D Mario, Mario 64 11.89m, Mario Sunshine 6.28m, Mario Galaxy 8.62m, did nintendo expect each of them to outsell mario 64?
Zelda  OoT 7.6m, Majora's Mask 3.36, Wind Waker 4.55m, Twilight princess 7.08m, did nintento expect each of them to outsell OoT?
Metroid fits the patern as well, but in terms of sales it's never been close to FF's or 3D mario or Zelda.

So by your description of Final Fantasy being on the decline. That would mean Zelda and 3D mario are as well. And Nintendo and Square Enix have never achieved what they expected in those games since, Mario 64, OoT, and FF7.

I see your posts.  You don't have to keep responding each time.  I just don't want to keep arguing about it because my position isn't going to change.

And really now, comparing 3D Mario to Final Fantasy isn't at all the same.  The reason the sales for the 3D Mario and Zelda games have fallen off is because of many different factors besides that of Final Fantasy such as Japan preferring 2D Mario/Zeldas, less advertising and etc.  When Mario 64 came out, it was the major release property and advertised game for the N64.  Not so for the subsequent Mario games.  Nintendo didn't spend nearly 4 years and multiple millions of dollars advertising Mario Galaxy like Square did Final Fantasy XIII.  And might I add, Mario Galaxy is seeing an upswing in Japanese interest in 3D Mario games while Final Fantasy XIII is seeing a downswing.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Yeah i can imagine FF12 was supposed to be released a lot sooner than 2006/2007, sakaguchi was the executitive producer for that, which explains why it took so long, because he left sqaure around that time i believe.

about FF10: 10 million, it did do extremely well, but do you think FFXV could reach that? it would be awesome for an FF title to reach that height again. oh and why do you guys think FF10 didnt sell 10 million??

FF12 took a long time because it was being done by Matsuno who had a very large vision for the game.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

FF7 is the only one that I think requires a remake; FF8 and FF9 were fairly solid, and are very playable today. FF7 needs new 3D art for map characters, and some of the rendered backgrounds replaced (due to poor navigation); as well as something done about load times and slow animations which make fighting take too long. I would be more interested in seeing something like this, as opposed to a huge massive FF13 quality remake.

I would love for them to port FFVII on the 3DS. I mean not a overhaul remake, but just a port. Keep all the pre-rendered backgrounds, CG cutscenes, and turn based battle but just update the character models so they won't look like Legos.

It would also serve as an apology to Nintendo fans for switching over to Sony.

A 3DS version of FF7 would be an absolutely perfect fit in my opinion. I would gladly buy that one.

I don't blame Square for jumping ship to Sony, Sony obviously had a greater financial interest in Square, and invested in the company (Nintendo didn't bother) and created hardware and a sales environment more suitable for the game. Nintendo went very exclusive and elitest, and as a result they had very little to offer on the N64 (and I mean quanitity here, I remember owning an N64 and considering each and every game thoroughly because only one game was released every month or two).

Probably because Square-Enix realized that their fanbase cannot possibly be satisfied. Any changes whatsoever that they made to any of the games would unleash a torrent of baw from the fanbase, but not making any changes at all would cause similar amounts of baw from the fanbase. The only way S-E can win is not to play, so they don't.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Yeah it would be great for ports to the 3DS or the PS3 (with upcoming 3D), not just for 7 but all 3. the reason it would work really well is because i think pre-rendered backrounds are really easy to translate into 3D. the pre-rendered backgrounds still hold up very well even today. but it would be great if they could upscale into 720p HD all on one blu ray. the only thing i would say is updating the lego models, and extra bosses, etc.

as good as that would be, i would rather have a complete remake of all 3 in 5/6 years time fully utilising the crystal tools engine.

Perhaps because SE like all the remake hysteria....

Keeps FF and SE in the minds of gamers, even though they have no intention of ever releasing any.

Seconded.

Just like predicting huge (over the top) sales is just a marketing trick.

Instead of bothering with remakes, make up some new stories, alternate the old battle-systems and bring out an 'old school' cheap to produce FF game.

I don't mind playing sprites and watch some stunning CGI in between for example.

Make it 15 bucks on Psn, Live and Steam and bam... in come more millions
