Forums - Nintendo - Analyst: DS to becaome the best selling console by October or November

Its still not the same, handhelds always have sold more than stationary. The PS2 is just the exception of the rule. Its shouldn't go in the same category since handhelds can be played everywhere, wheres a stationary can only be played at home and you need a TV for it to work.

'06 and '07 are proof that handheld sold more than home consoles.

*Portable* Console

Because: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_console

Still a console. It's like separating Laptops from Desktop PC's.

I never considered handhelds and consoles the same. It's different market.

It's more like comparing a Mac with a Ipod.

Technically , they are consoles with their own screen and power source....so they are consoles just portable.

And that analogy is horrendous...a mac is a fully functional computer while the Ipod/touch is just a multimedia device.....the Ipod/touch cant do all the things a mac can do.

The DS can play games.....just like the rest of the home consoles.

Going by your logic, we should consider the Tamagotchi as a console.

Except you missed two incredibly important words in his statement and went straight for the last line.

"fully functional".

I'd like you to come up with a single gaming feature that ANY home console offers that the DS can't.

Controllers, motion controls, downloadable content, local multiplayer, great graphics and so on. There's a lot of difference.

But a console is not only for games you see. I personally bought my PS3 for the blu-ray at first which shows it might appeal to a different market while handhelds are exclusively for gaming on the go.

That criteria you have for what a console is is also horrendous.......if we go by your logic then I guess the SNES ,ps1/2, gamecube etc. arent consoles.......

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!!!

Ok I won't reply to everybody but here's a summary of my thought:

Different experience.

But I have a question, should we consider the PC on the same level as a console and a handheld? Based on what some of you are saying, we should and then the PC is best selling console.

The Wii and the 360 are entirely different experiences.

Discuss.

PS3 vs. wii

different experience.

Does that mean it counts that Wii outsells Ps3 every week? Or since they offer "different experiences" that it doesn't matter at all? If it doesn't matter at all... why do people compare them head to head on the rare occasion where PS3 does outsell Wii?

Damage control is in full force here.

On PS3, Wii and 360, the difference of experience comes from the game, not the hardware itself.
I won't have a different experience if I play Oblivion on PS3 or 360.

Isn't that graph kind of unfair? That's one Ninty handheld against 3-4 consoles most of those years. So that seems like a dumb thing to point out. It's gotten close recently because Ninty has *gasp* a competitor. Handhelds are cheaper than consoles and are portable, it is not surprising that they would sell more.

And they would if it was more than 1 vs. 4.

The hardware doesn't change the experience?  What about this hardware?

To me the DS beating PS2 is not all that impressive. Almost any family with multiple kids is going to have multiple DSs, and we actually have more than that for the times we are playing. Once one has a PS2, there is almost no need to get another unless the first one breaks. The DS has also gone through four hardware iterations and ships in multiple color versions of each, causing more sales for people who want to update or switch the looks. The PS2 on the other hand only had two major versions, and only shipped in a far fewer number of colors for each.
