Controllers, motion controls, downloadable content, local multiplayer, great graphics and so on. There's a lot of difference. But a console is not only for games you see. I personally bought my PS3 for the blu-ray at first which shows it might appeal to a different market while handhelds are exclusively for gaming on the go. |
It has buttons (
), Really?, DSiWare or PSN, Never played a Pokemon game?, DS & PSP can produce "great" graphics.
The PSP can view photos, play movies & music and can browse the web.
Colors FTW

But it does appeal to a bigger market. Pretty much every kid I know own a DS. And not only them but their brothers and theirs sisters. I know a lot of big families with a lot of childrens and every children of the family own their own DS. So it's like 4 DS per family while you won't see 4 consoles per family. And I bought my DS at 99$. Now who wouldn't at that price? |
I'm really tired of posting of this pic =)

Mobile phones appeals to bigger market than consoles, hence >1 billion unit sales yearly vs how many?.. like 40 million of DS and PSP combined last year. That's what I call sizeble difference. Portable vs home consoles? Not so much. I'm just following facts, no assumptions.

But just so you know before, I was only talking about the DS since that's what he asked.
Yeah but I love analog sticks (mostly for shooters)
Ok motion controls are not that important but still, it can't do it!
I hate DLC anyway :P
I was talking about Splitscreen (I like to cheat by looking at their screens)
Yeah I was talking about the DS.
It's so easier with colors.
Oups I forgot black!
Well not really...I mean not enough for me. I prefer 2D graphics than N64 graphics.

But just look at these two articles. That's what I mean by different market:
http://www.qj.net/qjnet/wii/average-age-of-wii-owners-is-29-says-fils-aime.html
It says what's the average age of Wii owners and DS owners. Huge difference. Different market.

Well you said handhelds
And change your avatar.

No way! Ok maybe soon.
It doesn't really matter who bought the consoles. I'm sure Nintendo would care less if they sold 200million DS consoles to 8ft tall talking goldfish from Jupiter... they would still have sold 200million DS consoles in my obviously ridiculous hypothetical scenario...

Those articles are really out of date. "80 percent of DS owners are 8 to 16 years of age" - this's just plain wrong according to Nintendo themselves, only 30-35% of DS users are belong to this age group and this data is US only, Japan DS audience is considerably more diverse (hence penetration rate) and on top of that last survey resulsts were published a year ago, so I won't be surprised if DS US userbase now is closer to japanese. Does it mean that DS now appeals to older audience or it's just penetration rate is going up?
Really, "DS is for kids" - that's just old and out of date =)
