Forums - Sales - Are vgchartz software sales random guesses ?

EA just announced that Mass Effect 2 sold 1.6 million with 360 and PC included. Digital downloads are included too.

vgchartz thought that Mass Effect 2 was 1.72 million on 360 ALONE... Maybe they're 50 % or 100 % off or more, depending on PC sales.

How can these numbers be so wrong ? If it's that much off, what's the point ? Or are only 360 software sales inflated ?

Read this thread closely: http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=109046&page=1&str=783998061#
NPD has Mass Effect 2 at about 1m for the 360 version and that's only US sales.

So either what they said is crap (because they already shipped 2 million in the first week and that was quite some time ago); NPD is just as wrong as we are OR it actually sold 1.6 million on each PC and 360.

Mm...obviusly VGchartz predicts data based on different inputs and with a pre established formula, so Yes, maybe in this case its wrong. It could happen.

Hopefully, Vgchartz its in the average part of the equation.

lol @ your name.

Let's compare apples to apples instead of apples to puppies first.

These numbers are up to March 31st at which time our numbers for ME2 are 1.622m and not 1.72m

and now if you can tell us how much the game sold on PC we'll talk about how off we are.

btw, next time you want to question the numbers please try not to make them with such a douchey title, I'd rather threads like this stay up instead of getting locked because of your ridiculous choice of thread title.

...

1. We don't know the separation of sales between the 360 and PC in that statement from EA. It could have sold remarkably more on the 360 and not be anywhere close to an even split.

2. The statement is for the sales ending March 31st. Today is May 12th.

3. Yes VGChartz could be off.

Its would be a foolish presumption to say that ioi just guesses. Yes there is extrapolation from a more limited number of sources but then again its a free service thats updated every week and has excellent analytical tools and a great database. When the site is way off the numbers will be adjusted, but you cannot expect to get perfect numbers from a free service such as this. As always, you should use the numbers a a guide, nothing more.

I would say 80% of sales are guesses and the other 20% are estimates.

Another person belittling how hard it is to do what VGChartz does. Do you have any idea how hard it is to build and maintain a dartboard that's numbered from 1 to 5,000,000?
