I think they are mainly talking about the handheld market because the PS3 has picked up some momentum over the last few months.

It makes sense, Sony made themselves irrelevant to Nintendo in every market they compete in. However Apple is one company with a business sense and way of operating which could challenge their dominance of gaming. Furthermore any company which challenges Apple is also by extension challenging Nintendo as they are indeed competing for many of the same markets.

Nintendo has stopped competing over core gamer with Sony and now focusing on iPhone/iPod touch/iPad gamer who are interested in small scale, flash-like based games.

...no, the phone will have bad graphics, casual flash games, and you will only be able to dial the phone with an external wiimote type device...and for some stupid reason, the darn thing will sell so much it will gain almost 50% marketshare in the cellphone industry...

The momentum the PS3 has picked up has been fairly small, and has already declined. The problem with Sony is that they kind of turned their backs on the traditional console gamer market and instead built a system more suitable for the types of games you see on PC, they lost LOTS of customers.

I don't really see a good future for Apple in the real gaming scene. If they were to create a dedicated iPlay or some piece of garbage it would probably run off of iPhone OS (Like the giant iPod Touch known as iPad) and have a few buttons. This will be their justification to charge maybe $200-$300 more than the base iPod Touch. Even worse, an Apple console would have to be at a higher price than PS3 at launch because it has a picture of a fruit on it....
