Forums - Sales - PS3 beat out 360 for 2nd week in a row

Well Xbox is successful already because
1. There Hardware sales are outpacing the original xbox for the same time frame
2. There Software sales are incredible
3. They posted a profit before their second year and the original xbox didnt get a profitable quarter unitil their 4th year

Even if the PS3 outsells the 360 this generation, Microsoft will still consider themselves successful because they will still have successfully expanded their user base compared to the first xbox and they will have made the xbox division profitable. What good is marketshare if you squander all your profits to get it?

while i agree xbox has become more popular, i dont think its right to say they have "expanded" their userbase. so far 360 has sold what, 14.5 million? the original xbox sold about 24 million. until the 360 surpasses 24 million by a significant margin, its hard to say if the 360 has captured alot more gamers. thats the way i see it anyway.

Unless some sort of meteorite hits the planet earth or something we can safely assume X360 will sell over 24M.

well, to be fair, it took 2 years for the 360 to reach 14 million. for all you know sales could slow down in the next two years. it may just sell over 25 million in the next few years. 2008 is a new year and the tide could turn, especially now that it has a much greater lineup to compete against. but i do think 360 is much more likely to sell over 30 million, i also think the chance of it not selling that  much over 24 million is a high enough possibilty not to rule out. but, once agin, its just my opinion.

At this point in the original XBox's life, it had only sold 11 million. So I think it is fair to say the 360 has expanded its marketshare. Plus the original XBox was cheaper from the getgo than the 360 so it had an advantage. If the 360 even maintains their current sales, let alone increases, we are looking at 34-46 million based on a 5-7 year life.

Beating the PS3 is very important for the 360 this generation. Even if the 360 sells more than the original XBox did, it could still come in third this generation. Since they were second in the last generation, third would not be much of a success.

I still can't see the PS3 coming last as long as Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII remain PS3 exclusives, it's just impossible.

All microsoft has to do to be a success this generation is not lose money on gaming division overall and continue to prevent Playstation from becoming a monopoly in gaming. The XBox was created because microsoft was afraid of a sony living room console monopoly that would hurt windows sales.

PS3 might be beating XBox 360 in world wide sales right now, but sony is also still hemorrhaging money all over the place with PS3 while microsoft is now actually in danger of profiting off of XBox this quarter. Who do you think is going to be able to make a price cut in early to mid 08? This price cut is the one that matters, the one that makes the HD consoles affordable to the general public. If the premium goes down to $300 or lower with PS3 40gig still at $400, game over.

And in case anyone is wondering where my biases are, I am all nintendo. Microsoft and Sony can both suck it.

Compared to what MS has lost on the Xbox over the last 7 years, Sony isn't hemmoraging anything. MS isn't in that much better shape to offer a price cut if they ever want earn back the $5 billion plus they've already lost. Sony has barely suffered a paper cut. On top of that, Sony as a company is still making a profit, so I don't think they're too worried at this early stage in the game. No doubt this Christmas is important for all the companies, but the fact of the matter is that we still have probably 4-5 years left in this generation.

My Top 5:

Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger

My 2 nex-gen systems: PS3 and Wii

Prediction Aug '08: We see the PSP2 released fall '09. Graphically, it's basically the same as the current system. UMD drive ditched and replaced by 4-8gb on board flash memory. Other upgrades: 2nd analog nub, touchscreen, blutooth, motion sensor. Design: Flip-style or slider. Size: Think Iphone. Cost: $199. Will be profitable on day 1.

Do you understand the Microsoft is considerably bigger then sony and can easily take these hits with their reserve cash. When MS lost the most money i heard they maybe lost 1/6 of their profit (big) but sony is lost almost HALF of their profit from the ps3.

If HD DVD gains support this christmas i would be pretty danm worried if i was sony.

With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

Bet with Harvey Birdman that Lost Odyssey will sell more then Blue dragon did.

Cant believe i have to come in here and straight some of these things in peoples heads.

1. Ps3 just had price cuts, we are seeing the effect of price cuts. If MS were to have a 100 dollar price cut and new cheaper SKu out the door, you can bet the sales would also increase big time. Enough with the SOMG sony is keeping up with much bigger price and no games! Yea well ps3 has also shaved almost 2/3 of its price in 1 year, 360 cut its by 50 bucks and 30 bucks in almost two years. Tells you whos desperate.

2. Even if ps3 is outselling the 360, its barely doing it. With possibly 10k a week outselling 360, do the math to understand how long it will take the ps3 to catch up. Thats right 15 years. Good luck.

3. Black friday, you can bet america will be a huge boost to wii and 360.

ioi stated otherwise. he said that ps3 and ds saw huge increases on black friday, 360 and wii not as large.

He means percentage increases.

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

microsoft is a money making machine so $5 billion is nothing to them and they new the wouldnt make a profit on the original xbox, microsoft just wanted to stop sony taking over the living room at any cost
