Forums - Sony - Never saw this, the CELL can improve graphics after all

@libellule

The spe's are the CELL..

What is raytracing?

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/graphics/raytrace-faq/part1/section-2.html

Tehy say its bad because no developer will take the time to use it. Only sony.

BUT, 2 points :

- they have to use 3 PS3 !!!!!!!!!
- the car is pretty but cars in GT5 look better.

Again, I m not impressed ... sorry.

They use 6 spe's.

Basicly its like using 1 entire PS3. The thing is that they are running linux on the ps3 as well, and they can only use 2 SPE's per console.

Whats impressive? The graphics card(RSX) is not being used at all. Just the cell, its rendering a full 3d car. Wihtout the graphics card. Imagine if you add tht power to the graphics card.

You should read Entroper's response, but I'll highlight the important part for you:

They aren't using 2 SPEs from each PS3, they're using all available SPEs from all three PS3s. When he puts the light/dark filter over the image, you can see how the rendering workload is broken up. Cell has 8 SPEs, 7 of them are working in a PS3, and one is reserved for I/O, so 6 are available to programmers. One is used for image compression to send data over the network, the other 5 are used for raytracing. On the client, one of those 5 is used to decompress the compressed images sent from the other PS3s, so in total, 14 SPEs are doing raytracing to produce a 720p image with 4x supersampling.

He knows what he's talking about. He has programmed for the Cell.

And, God is this old. Way back before the New and crappy E3 even started. Look at the date on this thing.

Are people on this forum really that uneducated about the CELL processor? The CEll does most of the work on the games that are made correctly. Its the ports that rely heavely on the GPU as the 360 relies heavely on its GPU. The CELL was designed with GFX in mind. That is why they were originaly going to put 2 of them in the PS3. They went with Nvidia to make it a little easier on devs at first, and to cut costs. There was a really good video from the Warhawk devs about how they use the CELL to render everything in real-time, while the RSX is just there to make it pretty. So basicly RSX for textures, CELL for everything else. The vid isnt there anymore though since the game launched. There is however plenty of info about the CELL on the net.

thats right, theyre using the cell to render raytraced, volumetric clouds in warhawk. GT5 is the second game which makes use of raytracing, and i think many more exclusives will use the cell for improving graphics or optimizing its calculations (e.g. better occlusion culling) in the future.... I've read in a presentation from guerilla games that the cell has the same shader power as RSX, isnt this impressive?

In the begginning of the video the guy says he is using 2 SE'S from each of the 3 PS3's whcih = 6. Watch the vid.

Actually, he doesn't say that at all, so you should watch it again.  He clearly explains everything I said in my post at 1:00 into the video.  Each horizontal band is one PS3, each vertical band is one SPE.  You can clearly see that the top two horizontal bands have 5 vertical bands each, and the bottom has 4, for a total of 14 SPEs.  It's pretty explicit.

Who to believe... somebody that has actually developed things with the cell, and saw the output and was able to recognize what was going on, or leo-j, 15 year old vgchartz poster...

Sony is fighting 2 wars that absolutely no one cares about.
1. Blue Ray vs Hd dvd
2. Who has the absolute hands down greatest graphics in the world.

In the end. No one gives a crap!

 Ahhhh I see that your statements 1 and 2 are opinions :) Glad to know they've replaced facts ^_^;

1.) Isn't the movie industry currently bigger than the Video game?

2.) I loves me some graphics :P Apparently so do many people ^_^ but hey! I could be wrong :)

 Glad to see your great concern for facts as well.

1.  You do not state any facts here either

2.  Many people do, but more people do not since the DS and the Wii are kicking the crap out of the PSP and the PS3.

Beside, this video was unimpressive to say the least not to mention completely pointless.

The Cell was originally designed to be a multiple task chip. think of it this way its a CPU + GPU all in one chip, but GPU power had a huge leap the last few years. Sony realize the Cell isnt redenering as fast as a GPU, and thats one of the reason force them to delay the PS3 release to add that RSX at the last minute. I dont even need to proof this because if Cell can render graphic faster and better than the RSX, in an enconomic sense; there is no reason sony will add it inside the ps3 to increase its cost.

The least you could've done was watch the video in its entirety so you wouldn't look pretty foolish stating incorrect information

People mock the cell, but it's actually a pretty handy piece of hardware.  It's always neat to see the different ways people use it.
