Uh This thread needs locking.

Remedy have answered the debate head on with a clear answer now.

"The game is 720p. Those screenshots are based off footage captured at 960x540 like cocorenut pointed out, of course there will be some downsampling involved."

LOCK THREAD PLEASE!

From the OP:

"However, it's clear that the resolution analysis was actually performed on shots from German website videogameszone.de and the screens themselves were clearly taken at 720p settings. These shots have now been removed."

My actual answer comes direct from community manager at Remedy. " The game is 720p " is exactly what he said. So there is no Sub HD debate. It's over. Hence thread needs locking.

The best part is, the media loved the preview. Calling it impressive anti aliasing. I cant wait to see everyones face when Alan Wake has comments like "simply the best graphics on consoles yet" or "best graphics this generation". Because it will get those. It's destined to. The funny bit will be if it gets those and is indeed 960x540. Man some people here would melt down there brain with that info.

"Best graphics of the generation" not gonna happen without adding "so far". Sure as eggs another game will come along within the generation that will surpass it. That's not to detract from the games visual quality, it's merely pointing out the certain transience of holding the title of "graphics king of the world".

There are already games we know are coming that could overthrow this particular aspiring king.

What's been the average reign of a console graphics king? 6 months or less? If Alan Wake makes it a year as undisputed king it will be a fantastic achievement.

Despite the evidence to the opposite?

I'm not trying to bash the game or anything, I think it will be great, I just like my facts when it comes to technology.

There is no evidence. Remedy clearly state the images used to see 540 lines were taken from a downscaled image. In other words it was taken in 720p, downscaled then to 540p for the magazine. Thats not evidence. Previews of the game 3 months ago said it was native 720p when they played it. 1 downsized image is what has started this. Remedy have quickly pointed that out and told the truth of the game. End thread.

I don't understand why it matters when the game looks amazing?

"Despite a review version of Alan Wake being sent out by Microsoft to the games media with a strict embargo that expires in early May"

That was nice to read though! only a week and a bit till we get some reviews.

+1

Selnor, the final frame buffer is 720p, but the geometry is being rendered at 540p. Remedy's statement does not conflict with this. They are using their own scaling instead of the 360s scalar. But as DF said, this was obviously done for a reason, and we can only guess that Remedy chose a method that would work on the console and provide the highest quality visuals that they could. And, as you always bring up, the hands on statements from people always talk about how good the game looks. Resolution is just one part of image quality.

People don't understand that capturing in lower resolution just leads to a bit more difficulty on the pixel counting, bit it still works and is reliable. You can still find some high contrast edges and it doesn't size up width between edges, they remain the same whether u capture in 1080p, 720p or 540p.

You can do it on your own and see for yourself. It's 540p and it will be re-confirmed when the game will be on shelves (still is a review copy so there won't be any difference). Subhd + tearing : You can accept that from a small dlc game like Siren with 1/10 budget of an AAA game like Alan Wake, and especially after 5 years of developpement.

And Square-Enix said FF13 would look the same on both the 360 and PS3. I don't know what resolution Alan Wake runs at, but this wouldn't be the first time videogame PR lied (if that's the case), and the only reason Videogameszone would compromise the images would be to create controversy. In which case they've done a good job.

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I'm more inclined to trust the so-called journalism right now, rather than Remedy's PR department.

And again, I'm not trying to diminish the game in any way, I just want my facts.

Remedy are going to turn off your power and steal your flashlights. You've been warned...
