Definately the best gen....as for 16 bit being "Golden Age" the linked article can quite frankly shove it up its Arse !

16 bit was not Golden in any way.... in many respects the games industry was on its knees after the Great Crash !

Terrible gameplay with graphics and sound that merely served to paper over the cracks ruled the 16 bit era.

There were of course the odd shining gems but the 16 bit era is best seen as a transition phase rather than any hue of precious metal.

CLEARLY you didn't live through those games your oldest console is probably a ps2 or an xbox anybody who has played the games from the 16-bit era knows these are some of the best games every created judgeing them by graphics and sound is something only a person from the last or current generation would do.

Super mario world, sonic the hedgehog, chrono trigger, final fantasy 6,donkey kong country, super metroid, castlevania IV, and those are only some of the popular games. You really need to own a super nintendo genesis or a turbografx 16 to really experience all the great games.

I am Kong.

Strong and passionate, I tend to be misunderstood, sometimes even feared. I don't want to fight, I don't want to cause trouble, all I ask is a little love, and a little peace. If I don't get what I want, I get angry, and throw barrels and flaming oil at whatever's stopping me. What Video Game Character Are You?

I love FF6. I don't like donkey kong or chrono trigger though. I like Metroid. And I love Castlevania but that's not the point.

I think partly graphics. And Sound Should be considered. Because, take FFVI for example. The soundtrack is good. But let's say they did orchestrated it like they could have. It might look a bit odd, having those to mixed. But Surely the sound would make it a better game.

Unless you consider nostalgia a factor and surely not having snes would take away some of the nostalgia.

Not critiquing, Just Pondering. I don't really have a favorite Generation Just A Bunch of Games I love.... and it's happened every gen including this one.

I miss my Sega Genesis ...

I also miss creative game designers, now they just rehash 10 year old games for the HD generation.

F*** it.

Pretty sure that's just nintendo, and by your sig i'm assuming your a big nintendo fan, so your supporting them, that makes you a massive hypocrite.  I agree though, i also hate how developers can re-hash old games and have them sell like hot-cakes... pokemon anyone?

Chrono Trigger was published by Square (SE now) bud, not Nintendo.  My name and signature on this site show no real loyalty to Nintendo (Opa-Opa is the name of a character from Fantasy Zone).

And YES, I am a big Nintendo fan, but I'll be the first to admit their production value sucks lately.

BUT, that's not to say the other consoles don't cash-in.

(The Halos, Fables, Gears of War, God of War, Final Fantasy, etc. are all properties not owned by Nintendo, but have stuck to the formula, and in some cases, over a decade)

Take my "HD generation" comment loosely, because to me it pertains to this era of gaming (Wii included), just as 16-bit era was Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis.

No your right i didn't mean your sig, i meant the icon's under your avatar that say wii and ds and that's all.  I have no problem with fans of only one brand, that's your choice.  I just find it funny that you would make a comment about game developers no longer being creative when nintendo is the main culprit here.

I disagree.

Who's the best Pac, Nas, and Big. Just leave it to that.

Those are all decent reasons why this gen blows. But reason 2. is also why this gen rocks!

No Deus ex. Was badly ported to ps2. Deus ex 2 was ported to xbox

Badly ported to a console with no online and a console that flopped.

If CoD didnt do the hole ranking system do you think other FPS would of done it? I highly doubt it.

What are these generations you console gaming peasants speak of? :P

Seriously though, 32-bit was the best for me. 3D (perspective) games had only just started really taking off so devs were figuring out so many new play styles. The roots of nearly all modern games can be found back there. Otherwise, this is my 2nd fave gen.

@ thelifatree

Deus Ex 2 was ported to PC from X-box, hence the poor textures and small areas.

Wheres the option for 64bit/PSX gen?

First mass 3D games,
Loads of Innovation...

Dreamcast brought the internet to gaming whilst PSX offered pink-up for multiple consoles.

N64 offered 4 player gaming straight out of the box (with some pads).

MGS had real AI when they could see your footprints or breath!

Games like Beatmania and Parapper the Rapper opened the world of music games!

Orcania of time and Goldeneye were truly amazing!

Final Fantasy 7 saw JRPGs becomming massively popular in the west!

Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and Mario gave enjoyable 3D platforming.

FMV sequences actually gave pretty cool looking cutscenes for games.

Tekken re-defined arcade fighters.

Racing games let you actually drive the wrong way round the track instead of just following a 2D sprite stuck to moving left or right.

The first GTA shocked and appauled everyone and got big airtime on the news.

Players got their first introduction to rumble packs, analog sticks systems with memory cards so almost all games had save options.

Warcraft 2 and C&C were massive on both consoles and PCs making RTS games mainstream.

Duke Nukem made 13 year olds want to hop onto their father's PCs to try and stare at picelated boobs.

3D Football (soccer) games like fifa and ISSPro!

I could probably list more if I thought for longer but I'd say the 64bit/PSX generation was definately one of the best generations for gaming, so many new gaming genres, innovative and definitive games, new technology and truly exciting things coming out all the time. I don't think a single genre of gaming missed out on a difinitive game or new innovation in that period.

Edit: I guess by 32bit you mean N64/PSX/DC era after all (5th gen). Wikipedia reckons it is but I always thought the Mega CD  and the likes were the 32 bit gen since N64 was... 64bit, lol.

Maybe I'm getting older but this gen I have played alot more games that I haven't even been able to complete beacuse I lost interest in them or thinking the story isn't good enough to even finish to see the ending.

But I still can replay my Snes,PS1,PS2,N64,GC games once a year.
