Forums - Gaming - Who will dominate the next gen?

I know it probably too early but.. who do you think will dominate the next generation of home consoles?

Nintendo

Let be honest here - the only reason the Wii is in the first place is the motion controllers, not a huge library of quality games like the PS2 had

With both Sony and Microsoft getting their own motion controller, Nintendo obviously can't rely on that to put them in the first place again

The question is what Nintendo got for the next generation? The only "revolution" in gaming that can be potentially huge is 3D gaming and of course Sony is all over that with the PS3 supporting 3D gaming and their 3D TV's

Can a Nintendo console without gimmicks be successful?

You cannot predict what will happen next generation if you do not understand this generation. I suggest you reconsider your hilarious ideas as to why the Wii succeded.

Nintendo, if for no other reason that pissing off "core" gamers is good business. It's really amazing how many people are utterly clueless as to why Nintendo won (hint: it wasn't just the controller, or the price).

Another hint: pissing off "core" gamers was a calculated risk with the bonus of hilarious results. "Core" gamers don't rule anything except Jack and Shit. You're cash cow buying 3 maps at $15 a pop, buying $50 games and putting them in a "backlog" just to finally get around to them when you could have just bought them at $20. The core gamer is a useful tool, but an ever shrinking group and has been for a long, long time.

No way to tell. But there will be a change.

My mother.

I don't think anyone will dominate. In fact; I think it'll be the closest race in console history!

Around the Network

Nintendo, as long as they can keep the momentum up.

@cAPSLOCK: I say goddamn I love your posts, especially the one where you paraphrase Orwell.

What basis do you have for saying this?

PS1 and PS2 made gaming mainstream (especially in Europe), and are the only 2 home consoles to reach over 100 Million sales thus far.

PS2 is the best selling system ever, and is still selling 50k a week, even after 10 years on sale.

PlayStation has opened up and sells well in markets the others don't, or didn't... For the past 16 Years.

I hear a LOT more people talk about PlayStation than any other console or company (including Sony).

PlayStation is huge in pop culture. (Being in music videos, movies, Etc.)

The "PlayStation" line of systems have sold over 330 Million units worlwide, and growing.

Now i'm curious... Why do you obviously disagree?

Because Playstation's cultural relevance is in a nadir, and the Wii and DS are at apexes the likes of which gaming hansn't seen since the PS2.

Taken as a snapshot of current cultural relevance, I don't see how there's any comparison, here.

That's why the "PlayStation" line of consoles sold over 400k units this week.

DS line of consoles sold 366k.

Wii line sold 299k.

And saying the bolded is fixed for you. You may even have to remove the Wii from that phrase if it doesn't end up passing the PS2, but that's for another topic.

You do realize that you said Playstation was larger than Nintendo, right? You don't get to pull the "playstation family" bit while separating Nintendo's fair that way after a line like that. More, the DS alone has outsold all current-gen Playstation platforms combined.

And no, I meant since the NES, particularly in th states - not as a measure of raw sales but as a brand identity which shaped pop culture in the 80's.

The idea that Playstation right now is bigger than Nintendo is indefensible.

When people say they will play Wii, they don't say "Let's go play Nintendo Wii!"... They simply say "Let's go play Wii!".

Same goes for DS. I even still hear people call the DS a Gameboy ¬_¬

And it doesn't matter that the DS has outsold the PS3 and PSP. The PS2 is still there, still selling and STILL very, very well known WORLDWIDE.

The bolded made me lol. Are you suggesting that the PSone/PS2 didn't greatly "shape pop culture" in the 90's/00's? Seriously? The PS brand dominated gaming for over a decade.

Even a bunch of Nintendo fans admit that the PS brand is still the biggest.
