Forums - Sales - Console Digital Download Stats anywhere?

Hello.

i'd like to know if there are any reports out there with stats regarding sales from console digital distribution services such as XBLA, WiiWare, PSN. which one of the services has more downloads (sales) monthly.

or maybe comparisson between some multi-platform titles, such as megaman 9.  that would give me an idea of which one of the services is more popular. (compared to the amount of consoles sold).

thanks.

MegaMan is a rather bad example as it wasn't released at the same time on all platforms.

XBLA should be the biggest without a doubt. Then probably PSN and after that WiiWare. (Without counting the PS1 games, WiiWare might be 2nd)

There is no real sales data for PSN games AFAIK. Only monthly top 10s without numbers.

Thanks. i appreciate your opinion.

is there any sort of statistics that show the amount of people who have multiple consoles, i believe this is very true if there's a high percentage of people who own more than 1 console.

what title would you believe to be a good example?

so if i were to develop a game (digital download obviously), which platform should i chose to start with? that's the question i want answered through statistics.

thanks.

That's mainly an issue for Japan though.  In the west MM9 was within a few weeks on all 3.  MM10 did that in Japan too actually.

I'd say MM9/10 are probably the best for direct comparison we can get (as they're identical across platforms content wise), though it does skew to a certain audience moreso (ie: the Wii retrobase).  Maybe Sonic 4 will be good to compare, though again the Sonic base seems already solidified on Wii.    Are there any other multiplatform games across all 3 that have identical content?

NPD did a a report on multiconsole ownership last fall.  It's US only, but it might give a good idea...

Wii Owners
60% only own a Wii
40% also own one or both of the other consoles
14% also own a PS3
26% also own a 360

PS3 Owners
22% only own a PS3
78% also own one or both of the other consoles
42% also own a Wii
36% also own a 360

360 Owners
40% only own a 360
60% also own one or both of the other consoles
42% also own a Wii
18% also own a PS3

...of course this doesn't reflect the proportion of userbase that's online.

If you're doing a DD game, XBLA is probably the easiest to get up and running on, thanks to XNA/Indie Games.  Of course that route has it's own issues, but you don't need a publisher (you do on normal XBLA) and you get worldwide certification (you get this on normal XBLA also).  On WiiWare, you don't need a publisher but you do need to prove you're a legit company (but the threshold is pretty low/lenient) and you also get worldwide certification.  On PSN you need a publisher and certification is regional (meaning you need to resubmit individually to SCEA, SCEE and SCEJ).
