Forums - Microsoft - Mass Effect 2 sales in the toilet-- is the reason ME1?

Overall sales are definitely good, but ME2 does not appear to have any legs. ME2 should be able to sustain much better growth, especially since it is a GOTY contender and the main 360 exclusive of 2010 so far. My main point is that one of ME2's greatest strengths is also its greatest weakness-- fans can't get the richest possible experience in ME2 without first playing ME1.

LOL why would it not have legs? ME2 is tracking higher than ME1 at the same point in time. And if I remember correctly ME1 was released in November.

If you want to criticize the fact that you don't feel your getting the "richest possible experience in ME2 if you havent played ME1", just criticize that then and don't make a foolish statement that ME2 sales are in the toilet.

My main point was this game is no longer selling in the top 50 games category after 2 months, which is a great indication that it doesn't have strong legs. This isn't a comparison post to ME1, this is a comparison post to other recent best-selling games.  ME2 isn't tracking very well for a GOTY contender after 2 months, and I think this is a sad thing.

i would suggest clicking the following link:

http://www.vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?reg1=All&game1=Mass+Effect+2++-+X360[28815]&reg2=All&game2=Mass+Effect+-+X360[7635]&reg3=All&game3=&weeks=100

While that does show ME2 outselling ME1, you'll notice that it is actually now selling less per week than the original in the comparable weeks:

Week Mass Effect Mass Effect 2
1 394,757 961,290
2 271,280 268,077
3 144,359 151,848
4 136,931 83,891
5

6 92,295 37,865
7 55,936 26,541
8 37,851 20,627
9 35,324 16,721
10 35,212 -

As you can see, ME2 has declined extremely quickly. I know sequels are generally more front loaded, but it is down almost 20k per week on the original after just 9 weeks.

ME1 came out in the holidays though.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

Selling 1.6 million copies on the 360 alone in nearly 3 months is considered a failure?!

head, meet desk.

compared it to Fallout 3 & oblivion

legs aren't too great.

Lets see if it outsells the first.

Just bad timing of release,Mass Effect 2 has the reviews to go toe to toe with them, but Final Fantasy XIII,Battlefield:BC2 and for those with more than the 360 in their home,God of War III,Heavy Rain,MAG and Red Steel 2.

There's been so many games released in the last three months, and Mass Effect 2 doesn't have as dedicated fans as some of the franchises I mentioned.

Yeah, Red Steel 2 is dominating the charts...

Seriously though, Mass Effect 2 is doing great in my opinion. It had a great opening and the legs have been solid. I think people had unrealistic expectations and ultimately this will greatly outsell the original.

ROFL!

______

Maybe FFXIII did hurt it?

but they are so different, it doesn't seem like their audiences would be similar.

read again what darth and I said.

That comparison data is almost worthless without the right knowledge.

Games launched in the holiday season will always see a boost over the following weeks.

Furthermore it was the first in the series. Many people didn't know what to expect, so many decided to wait for other people's recommendations, which is clearly not the case with ME2. That's why ME2 first week sales saw an 150% increase.
