Forums - Sony Discussion - do you remeber MAG? It´s kinda "out of the media.."

I actually predicted slightly higher sales in Americas and lower in Others, but for total I was pretty spot on.

new IP
multiplayer only
256 player multiplayer means that it very much needs to already have a big online community before it becomes good, hence limiting its appeal, especially in certain parts of others where online gaming communities are generally smaller

I dont see whats bad with MAG sales....online only game already sold 700k+ and will mostlikely climb to 1m+ before it stops selling, it even sold tons more than the new released metro with a higher review score and sold on the xbox which has a stronger shooter fan base....

I was expecting like 1m first month... that was my expectation since it´s the first game this size...

PSN: franco-br
MGS4, GH, MW2, GT5p, WipeoutHD, etc..etc..

I've been under the impression (for a long time) that this is SOCOM on steroids. Considering the last SOCOM game is just breaking 1m, I actually think MAG sold pretty well.

SOCOM 4 should be able to do far better numbers than Confrontation.

I agree.  They are re-adding the single player campaign portion, and hopefully Zipper makes a much less laggy and glitchy game than the developers of Confrontation.

I figured this would happen. It'd go the route of Warhawk. It'd have decent to good initial sales, but non-existent legs. The first group of buyers would form a very dedicated and very hardcore playerbase that would intimidate new users, stymieing future growth.

That's about what I think but I think it's actually going to eventually die off.

The difference between MAG and Warhawk is number of players.  I don't know how many players Warhawk is but MAG needs 512 players for a single game.  Ontop of that, there are three factions so that means you need at least 256 players per faction so that's 768 players.

But that isn't all, you need enough players for faction 1 vs faction 2, faction 2 vs faction 3, and faction 1 vs faction 3, meaning you'd really need at least 1024 players and would really need 1536 players.

Having a minimum of 1024 players online in a mediocre shooter is going to be harder and harder to do in a world where there are much better shooters that require much less effort.

Add to that the large barrier to entry and the fact new players are going to be absolutely murdered, there's really no way for this game to grow or at least grow enough to cover players leaving.

As I've said since the game was announced, it will probably start with bang, trickle off the radar, and then die.  Even with a hardcore player base, the game really just can't sustain itself or at least sustain itself and be played the way it was meant to be played.

I'm pretty positive the servers will be taken down long before the PS3 ends its life.

Eh you do know its 128 players on each side making it a total of 256 players needed for each game. Also the game has about 20k online at a time. Theres always about 8k playing domination, 8k playing sabatage and 4-5 k playing acquisition. I remember someone saying something a lot simular to what you said about Socom Confrontation last year and if you load that game up its still very active.

Also Sony will lower the games price or possibley re-release it in there platnum hits titles if the games online community drops and theres future DLC that will bring players back especially if they release another faction to play with as which is a big possibility.

There is no server locking in MAG so as long as 1% of all players play constantly, there is no problem getting a game running. Zipper will also boost the player numbers with double XP and DLC-events, like last weekend.

MAG was designed to be a game where Zipper continues adding more content as time goes by. Improving the game and the Shadow War, kinda like MMORPGs do. So far we've had 5 patches, and 2 free DLC packs (special armor and trooper gear pack) and it's been only 2 months.

and about the hardcore crushing the weak, the average player level is rather low still. Anyone who doesn't play with their toes should do just fine and if shooting isn't your thing you don't even have to do that.

Also Socom 4 will not end MAG's support at all, it's done by another team (with some crossovers of course) So to other MAG fans don't worry, the game isn't gonna just rollover and die.

@ twesterm I think you should really play MAG first before saying anything about it.

and MAG will die off soon, community isn't strong enough for such a massive game, and it appeals to an endangered species of gamers, people who are into hardcore tactical shooters on consoles are slim to none.

Shame, it is shuch a great game, truly 1 in a million, the first of it's kind, but it will def. not be the last, I believe MAG 2 and the eventual clones will do great next gen.

do think this would have rocked a mega ton on PC where these type of shooters belong.

If I wanted a game 100% focused on online gameplay I'd rather buy a PC game.

I think the problem with it is the pricetag. I usually don't like this arguement but i really can see no other as i have wanted to play this game but there's no way i'll pick it up for 60 when i still enjoy playing MW2. I would definately consider buying it though if the price dropped 20-30 bucks though
