Forums - Nintendo - Ok so I must ask, WTF is up with Others ?

Because everyone knows the only games worth playing are Nintendo games.

And dance games of course.

Pretty much this, I have a friend (well not "friend" per se) at the largest Czech retailer (Xzone.cz). And they don't sell basicaly any Wii's and Wii games, all of this is beeing sold in our alternative to Wallmart. There you have Wii and super limited game selection with Nintendo titles, beeing dominated by Mario Kart and NSMBWii, titles like Red Steal have no chance to claim and shelf space, the rest is the worst of shovelware.

And no real gamers buy Wii stuff or games here, everyone have either Xbox or PS3 (or PC, which is still most dominant in our area). It might be different in the west, but this is pretty much the situation from here to the east. Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and the rest to the east are pretty much like this. With PS3 beeing the strongest console, since there have never been the first Xbox and people don't know the brand. But this area isn't tracked by VGChartz so it doesn't matter. I can imagine the "market" here isn't as large as in other western countries like UK or Germany, but Poland has just 8 milions less people and even though their GDP is way smaller, games do sell here.

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

How accurate are for example the "Silent Hill: Shattered Memories" vgchartz numbers for others?

I own a little german Wii site and my SH sales are high, for Feb-Apr SH-sales are on top together with NSMB wii numbers. The past has shown me that games that has high sales on my site has high sales overall. But in the past few month the other sales of many games on vgchartz seems to be lower than I expected.

ill tell you why majority of third party games dont sell in others....
its a serious lack of advertising.
I live in UK and have not seen a single advert for many of my most anticipated games - Red steel 2, Silent Hill and monster hunter tri - to name a few.

The only reason i am aware of these games is because i have such a big interest in games already, people who do not check gaming websites and magazines weekly are not aware of these games, and its a big shame.

Third party developers need to start pushing their software, or stop complaining.

In the UK, adverts for games like Just Dance seem to be the only ones around.

Actually I have seen tons of Red Steel adverts in the UK. And I hardly even watch adverts thanks to Sky +. So if the game hasn't sold well in UK it certainly isn't down to lack of TV advertising.

Thanks for the perspective from the UK-it seems that you guys are the most focused demo for core titles after perhaps the US. The reason I started off this topic with a specific mention against using ads as an example is because we in the Americas never get them either. Bad Wii advertising seems to be global, which suggests to me the ills of 'core in Others is not linked at this specifically. I for instance, being the quintessential lazy TV  watching American have yet to see a RS2 ad. Nor did I ever see one for Silent Hill in the months since it's release, yet both titles while still selling embarrassingly bad considering their quality managed to sell 4x as much on opening week in the regions compared.

Another thing that keeps getting brought up is that the Wii is purchased as a family console and not for the core. Again I challenge you to tell me why that is different between the regions? As we can all see (from sales) the Wii audience in the Americas is also casual oriented, but not in such an extreme way.

I would suggest that perhaps there is a cultural difference between the regions, but yet again the variety of Others really prevents me from making such a conclusion.

Without insulting the great comments so far I would argue that no one has really provided a reason that is exclusive to Others and not to the Wii scene in general.  So I ask once again:

Why would owners in Others be more casually oriented considering that they receive the same (almost none) promotion as the Americas?

That said it seems distribution is a difficulty, but I would be curious to hear from others if this is just in certain areas or if it is a general problem.

There are also a very high percentage of the core Wii players in EU that pirate their games (this is unfortunate but true).

Interesting. It seems to be a big problem in all regions, but perhaps the poor distribution componds this problem?

I think what needs to change is that people need to accept that the market isn't going to buy a game just because we might like them to buy it. Let it go, and accept that you only get to vote with your own dollars, you can't vote with somebody else's.

Try telling that to Democrats, lol!

I think you might be surprised how much money there would be to spend if it wasn't being burned sending our troops off to die in random oil fueled wars against people who could care less about us. But hey killing random brown people is always better than helping our fellow countrymen get basic needs like heathcare eh?  If we incur debt I for one would prefer it be for good rather than evil- but that's just me. Sorry if that makes me a Commie, but it also lets me sleep at night.

Maybe because a lot of Europe got introduced to gaming by the Playstation. Nintendo (not Wii or DS, but Nintendo) fans are probably a lot rarer.

1) Maybe it's because the games aren't hyped through the roof?

2) They didn't cost 30 Million dollars+ to make, therefore considered not worth buying.

Well, the UK is probably closer to the US than to Continental Europe. I live in Austria and the Situation here is comparable to Germany (although we get the games uncut^^). In Austria Video Games are often regarded negative because of violent content (killer games are commonly seen as the reason why young people run amok). People older than 40 are often strict enemys of gaming and do not like their children to play for hours. Nintendo is often the better choice for the children because there are more games suited for them. Thats (one of many reasons) why the DS is such a success. Some Kids already get them as early as when they start with the Kindergarten.

If you go to a Saturn Store, you can see the difference how PS3/X360 and the Wii are marketed. I gave it up, because I couldn't find suitable Wii Games for me amongst all the crap games (shovelware). I only buy them online now.

The other main target group are people, who grew up with the NES and the SNES and like the main game series. Nintendo has a core following because of Mario and Zelda games.

The Wii is also marketed as entry console for Non-Gamers (a friend of mine went to Saturn to buy a console and he was advised to buy a wii instead of a PS3, because the games are easier to play.).

I own a Wii for a year now and got my PS3 1 month after its launch. My reasons for buying the Wii were the Virtual Console (for all the Nes and SNES classics), its B/C to the Gamecube (i didn't buy one) and to play the Mario and Zelda Games (Wii and the N64/GC via Virtual Console). But to say the thruth, I am pretty disappointed with the Wii. Wii sports is such a bad game, it only entertained us for 3 hours. I got Wii play only because of the Wii Remote Bundle, and that Game is also only average and we did'nt play it any longer after 3 days. I simply cannot understand, why people make so much buzz about how well they sell. They are simple tech demos and are not worth mentioned compared to all the High Profile Games. I mean, nobody goes crazy because Minesweeper, Solitaire and Freecell are selling millions...

I do not like the Motion Controls. I got Eyetoy Play 1-3 Years ago and they got pretty boring soon, too. It is so silly (in my opinion), to waggle the controller in Fifa to shoot. There are to few buttons, etc.

The 3rd Party support is also pretty lame. Konami, Capcom and Square-Enix are bringing their flagship Games to the PS3. Maybe i am wrong, but it seems that the wii is getting the PS2 version often and the PS3 and 360 get the better (or HD) version of the game.

I got games like Metal Gear Solid 4, GTA 4, Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry 4, Final Fantasy XIII, Tekken 6 etc. for the PS3 (successors of some of the biggest PS2 Hits in Continental Europe), but the Wii is NOT getting them. That is maybe what is hurting the Wii the most. And that is why the PS3 is so strong in Continental Europe (UK is a different story, but that are cultural differences (Anglo-America vs. Continenal Europe).

I am not saying, that there are no good games for the Wii. Only, that nearly all the big franchises of the last Gen are on the PS3 and will probably stay there in the future. It somehow hurts me (metaphorically), that high profile Games like FF CC sold pretty bad and such simple Games like Wii Play, Wii Sports, Wii Fit or Let's Dance are seen as reference Titles for the Wii (among many others), when they are nothing more than a collection of mini games. And you go to the Saturn and have to look for the complex Games somewhere hiding below a stack of simple Games (ok, now I am going drama, but I you know what I mean).

It seems to me, that the PS3 is in for a strong year in continental Europe this year (finally FF XIII is out!) and the wii, though having good sales and all, will still see the same Games in the top ten (Wii xxxx and NSMB Wii) and complex games having a hard time. But since there is not much choice, they will sell eventually.

It's pretty simple what happened. Gamers bought the other two consoles.

Not because the wii is deficient or a poor console, but because they went where the games went. Nintendo is an amazing company, but compare them to every other single game developer and it's pretty lobsided.

Third parties picked the other two consoles because that's where they thought the money would be, and once they were already locked in with their experience, tech and major franchises, it became too late to shift to the winning console. Wii will go down in history as the amazing machine that laughed in the face of the entire industry.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.
