It's pretty simple what happened. Gamers bought the other two consoles.
Not because the wii is deficient or a poor console, but because they went where the games went. Nintendo is an amazing company, but compare them to every other single game developer and it's pretty lobsided.
Third parties picked the other two consoles because that's where they thought the money would be, and once they were already locked in with their experience, tech and major franchises, it became too late to shift to the winning console. Wii will go down in history as the amazing machine that laughed in the face of the entire industry.
