Forums - Sony - Sony's Blatant Lie (About Other OS)

You should be more outraged they removed BC and stop buying any CD-R's or BRD's or PS games! That was a feature more people cared about and got screwed ver with. But your just over reacting anyway.

They also removed 20gb from the Euro models. You should have been huffy and puffy years ago with features that were used everyday but a lot of users. Not now, This is a useless feature that really just takes up space.

How is this even in the same league? Look I'm going to put the main reason in caps, since you don't seem to be paying attention anyways. THEY DIDN'T REMOVE BC AND 20GB's OF MEMORY FROM ALREADY BOUGHT CONSOLES! THEY TOOK THEM OUT OF CONSOLES THAT HADN'T BEEN BOUGHT! NO ONE HAD PAID FOR THOSE FEATURES

you try contacting Sony, or the equivalent of the Better Business Bureau in Australia. you may be able to some finical restitution as what they did is probably against Australian consumer rights/laws. you just have to call them on it.

I spoke to the ACCC this morning and then to GAME where I bought it from. They claim they need to speak to their ACCC rep and I suspect they're really trying to wriggle out of this, but I doubt they'll have any luck. Part of me feels for them, but at the same time, they're retailers and this kind of thing comes with the territory.

Did you even read his post? It explains why he bought it in there. He did not get tax breaks for it, sony got less taxes on each machine by saying it was a computer in the EU (i'm not from the eu, but I assume it has to do with the VAT, which is similar to sales tax in the us i believe). Reread maybe?

Yes, I did read it.  He said he bought it with the intention that it's primary purpose would be as a business computer.  I can't remember ever seeing Sony advertising the PS3 as a business machine, or even implying it.  And yes, he will get tax breaks for it as it'll be claimed on accounts as an asset, so deducting it's depreciation from the profits in the current or following year.

In regards to Sony getting the PS3 classified as a computer in the EU (like a lot of companies do (thus saving them on taxes and lowering the cost to the consumer)), it doesn't make it so.

Thanks for that Thranx. The other issue is that when we made the decision, there wasn't alot of startup capital there for additional equipment and so it was also a budgetary issue, not to mention that I live in Australia, not the EU, and I don't even know if the tax issue even applied here. Besides section 71 of the Australian Trade Practices Act states:

-The goods must be fit for their purpose. That is, they should do what they are supposed to do and be suitable for any purpose that you might have made known to the supplier. Can you still use linux on it?  Can you still play games on it?
-The goods must match the description you were given or the sample you chose from.
Furthermore theses conditions must not change within a reasonable amount of time. As per the statutory warranty.Second hand goods would be under the warranty of the seller rather than manufacturer wouldn't they?

Clearly the lesson here is to stear clear of Sony just as you would any other disreputable company.  If you mean any company that withdraws a service or features of a product, then you'll be doing a lot of stearing...

i hate how Sony takes features out over time, i bought a phat even though the slim was out just for this reason. This is different from that though, you can't take features out of systems that people already bought. That is ridiculous. I don't even use linux on my PS3, but i sure as hell don't want any features taken out of any of my game systems that i bought. Like many other people in here though i don't see the upside to what they are doing here for anybody, it seems incredibly stupid.

so now retailers have to pay for Sony's stupidity??  If that is true it is pretty sad.  Go figure it is a neogaf member lol.

Sony has made many modifications, which have added things for free to the system such as trophies.

Sony have added allot more than they've takn aways in regards to firmware, and yet people bitch.

The only person to blame is Geohot, he was the one that announced he had cracked the PS3, and in reaction like any companie trying to protect it's business put in a measure to disable the "others OS" feature IF the user chose to upgrade to the firmware.

So at this stage, if your angry that you lost "others os" after upgrading the firmware, then you have no one to blame but your self, as Sony clearly stated in the upgrade log that the feature would be removed and as the user you choose to accept the terms and condition and procceed to upgrade the firmware.

so a company trying to protect it's business by protecting it's software from being compromised is stupid?

I suppose if a theif broke into your house you would allow him to take everything, is that what you would do?, after all doing otherwise is stupid in your eyes.

How is that similar at all?  The only person stealing here is Sony.  We already have people getting refunds now, the law isn't even on Sony's side.  Not only that but if we use this flawed analogy this doesn't even prevent the "thief" in this case from doing whatever he wants.
